Week twee van DreamHack Masters Fall zag TIJD het winnen van zijn achtste Chinese kampioenschap op rij, waarmee hij opnieuw zijn totale dominantie in de regio bevestigde. De Europese en Noord-Amerikaanse regio zagen ook traditionele krachtpatsers de leiding nemen in de kampioenschapsrace Serral hij sloot de groepsfase van de EU af met een ongeslagen record van 14-0, terwijl Neeb die prestatie bijna evenaarde met een record van 14-1 in Noord-Amerika.

De DHM Fall regionals eindigen in week drie, waarbij Europa en Noord-Amerika hun kampioenen bekronen. De gecombineerde seizoensfinales met zes spelers van de GSL worden gehouden van 9 tot en met 12 september.

Europese regionale

De play-offs beginnen Dinsdag 10 augustus 3:00 GMT (GMT+00:00).

Serral zette Europa onder de aandacht tijdens de groepsfase, met een uitstekend record van 7-0-series en 14-0 op de kaarten. Hoewel de RO32 nauwelijks een perfecte voorspeller is voor de play-offs, is dat zeker het geval vilt alsof we de consistent dominante Serral van weleer zagen.

Alleen in een onverwachte wending HeldMarine matched Serral’s 7-0 record (with an impressive 14-2 map score), his best performance yet in the European group stage. Looking to be in great form, and with a bracket draw that avoids both Reynor and Serral until the upper bracket final, this season is a fantastic opportunity for Big Gabe to grab his first top three (or higher) European finish in the EPT era.

Daarnaast is Clem fans might have reason to be concerned about his placement in HeroMarine’s side of the bracket. The French Terran has yet to conclusively dispel the doubts about his TvT and TvP (losing to goblin’s Phoenixes in the group stage didn’t help), and the next few matches will be an important test. Who knows—even the resurgent MarineLorD could be a difficult challenge in his initial match.

Reynor also gave up a loss headed into the playoffs, losing 0-2 to ShoWTimE in the final week. While Reynor still clinched the #1 seed out of Group A due to his superior map score, one has to wonder if he’s not yet 100% locked in like he was during the Summer Season Finals. Of course, if Reynor is indeed playing at his best, he could easily rampage through all of the other title contenders and reclaim the European crown.

De play-offronde is ook behoorlijk intrigerend vanwege de ontbrekende spelers, zoals beide Lambo en Elazer ging uit in de groepsfase (Elazer verloor een tergend nauwe tiebreak van PtitiDrogo op één-op-één-record). Nu twee van de gevaarlijkste wildcards van het toernooi zijn verdwenen – vooral in Zerg vs Zerg – lijkt een top vier uit het boekje van Serral/Reynor/Clem/HeroMarine waarschijnlijker dan ooit.

Toch zou dit ook een kans kunnen zijn voor iemand die nieuw is om door te breken in de top vier. Show Time has had an unusually hard time since the switch from Blizzard’s WCS to ESL’s DreamHack Masters, but his overall skill level in online competition suggests he’s due for a top four finish at some point—remember, he beat Reynor 2-0 in the final week of groups. From the new guard, Max Pax could pose a threat to the established order. The young Danish Protoss looked out of his depth playing BO5’s in TSL7 and DHM: Summer, but now he has those experiences under his belt and seems to only have improved since. While one should be wary about expecting linear growth from a player, MaxPax, too, seems on pace for a breakthrough tournament.

The group stages also gave us a couple of surprise second place finishers, though one has to be a bit less optimistic about their chances against Europe’s elite. Noord-Amerikaanse regionale

Het toernooi begint op Dinsdag 10 augustus 8:00 GMT (GMT+00:00).

In de Noord-Amerikaanse groepsfase was het business as usual Neeb (+13 kaartdifferentieel), Scarlett (+12), en Astrea (+11) locking in the top three group stage results without much incident. While Scarlett managed to beat Astrea 2-1 to secure first place in Group A, previous DHM tournaments have shown that this isn’t always an indicator of who will win in the playoffs. With Aligulac.com’s rating system having all three title contenders closely packed in the 2600’s, fans can look forward to another tight, three-way battle for the NA crown. It does seem like Scarlett will begin with a small advantage, however, as Astrea and Neeb have drawn a 1v1 off the bat.

Zelfs Noord-Amerika heeft in de marge ruimte voor enkele onverwachte resultaten. In groep B hebben we het gezien Namshar win de strijd van de parttimers en claim het nummer 2 zaad uit zijn groep. Given how tenuous retirement can be in the SC2 scene, perhaps this wasn’t really that much of a surprise. Given MaSa’s knack for being a big tournament player who can steal maps without much practice (proxy-Barracks playing a large role), he may have the best chance out of the entire NA field at causing an upset.

Chinese regionale: TIJD wint opnieuw

TIJD won zijn vijfde DreamHack Masters China Regional op rij (en acht in de WCS/EPT-lijn), waarmee hij zijn plek ver boven de rest van zijn nationale scene behield. Zoals vaak het geval is, toonde TIME al vroeg een vleugje kwetsbaarheid in TvP, om vervolgens terug te komen en te domineren in de grote finale.

Deze keer was het MacSed die TIME kortstondig bedreigden en nipt met 2-3 verloren in hun halve finale. Toen de ervaren Protoss een sterke economie en stabiele infrastructuur mocht opbouwen, kon hij TIME overmeesteren met zwermen Gateway-eenheden. Maar uiteindelijk bleek TIME veel te sterk in de koppeling en versloeg MacSed met 4-0 in de rematch van de grote finale met krachtige vroege game-aanvallen.

Once more, the only relevant question headed into the next Chinese regional seems to be “Who can beat TIME?”
