  • Binance Academy has concluded the first leg of its Southeast Asia University Tour in the Philippines, visiting five universities such as the Asia Institute of Management, the University of Batangas, the National University Laguna, the Enderun Colleges, and the Far Eastern University.
  • Binance has been joined by YGG in the Laguna leg, and the DICT-CICC participated as well.
  • The University Tour aims to visit 75 educational institutions across 25 countries.

Binance Academy, the educational platform of Binance for crypto and blockchain, wrapped up the first leg of its Southeast Asia University Tour in the Philippines by visiting five institutions in the country.

Aiming to promote global blockchain and digital currency awareness and literacy, the team was led by Kenneth Stern, the general manager of Binance in the Philippines, and visited the universities from April 17 to April 20, 2023.

“By working together to build the Web3 infrastructure in the Philippines, we will be able to see more Web3 jobs being created and build a pipeline of local talents. This is an opportune time for young people to learn more about the technology and the values that it can bring,” Stern noted.

What is the University Tour of Binance Academy?

To promote global blockchain and digital currency literacy, Binance Academy has been conducting university tours in 75 educational institutions across 25 countries.

The platform stated that it believes that it is crucial to provide users with access to educational resources and information to close the knowledge gap as this emerging technology develops.

During its first leg, Binance noted that the Philippines has shown significant growth and interest in the Web3 ecosystem and has a proven track record of adopting blockchain technology.

Aside from the university tour, the exchange giant also launched the Binance Scholar Philippines Web3 Scholarship in partnership with Edukasyon.ph to promote education and provide opportunities for Filipinos in the Web3 industry.

The PH Leg

The academy was able to engage with over 1,000 students and staff from universities such as the Asia Institute of Management, the University of Batangas, the National University Laguna, the Enderun Colleges, and the Far Eastern University.

For Binance Content and Partnerships Manager Adam Smurthwaite, the Philippines is the ideal destination for the initial leg of the Binance Academy Asia Tour because the team received positive feedback from the universities and their eagerness to host training sessions for their students.

He also noted that although blockchain technology is still emerging, it is not new to many Filipinos due to the country’s enthusiasm for GameFi. The goal of the tour is to provide a gateway to web3 for young minds.

Binance Academy collaborated with Yield Guild Games (YGG) to educate attendees about Web3 gaming and NFTs. Following the talk, the 400 students in attendance formed groups to generate creative ideas to gamify a learning platform;  the winning group received exclusive Binance merchandise as a prize.

Meanwhile, for their visit to the Enderun Colleges, Binance was joined by representatives from the Department of Information and Communications Technology’s (DICT’s) Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) Project Development Officers Carlos Antonio Albornoz and Vienne Mari Velasco, and Jeannine Roxas, the technology consultant of CICC and assistant vice president for IT Audit at SM Retail, Inc.

It can be recalled that in 2022, Binance and Enderun Colleges teamed up to further boost web3 education in the Philippines.

“Blockchain is a promising technology that is gaining more traction and usage in the Philippines. However, it is still very new, and in order to encourage more adoption among Filipinos, it is important to provide them with relevant Web3 education. I am glad there are training sessions, such as this one organized by Binance Academy, available to people,” Roxas stated.

This is not the first time that Binance and CICC have teamed up. Recently, Binance joined the CICC to attend the launch of the National Cybercrime Hub operated by the DICT.

Binance also conducted a “Cryptocurrency and Cybersecurity Training” seminar in Quezon City last year in partnership with the CICC. The training is meant to provide members of the Philippines’ cybercrime law enforcement with an overview of cryptocurrency activities, common financial cybercrimes, investigative techniques, prosecution, and the development of digital forensics reports.
