After lawmakers in Arizona approved legislation involving fantasy sports and sports betting legalization, DraftKings and the PGA Tour wasted no time extending their existing partnership into the state. Once Governor Doug Ducey signs the bill into law, operators will have the opportunity to offer retail and online services to the public.

Pending regulatory approvals, DraftKings will have market access in Arizona within the retail and mobile sectors. Details of the agreement include the PGA and DraftKings opening a retail sportsbook at TPC Scottsdale.

As part of the expansion into Arizona, the PGA Tour and DraftKings will use TPC Scottsdale as the home of a brand new “19^th hole” experience. Fans will be able to gather in the sportsbook year-round and place bets, plus watch games. Dining and beverage options will also be included.

Both companies are working with Scottsdale officials and the Thunderbirds to create the project. The Thunderbirds are the Waste Management Phoenix Open host, an event held at the golf course each year.

DraftKings chief business officer Ezra Kucharz commented on partnering with the PGA Tour last summer, becoming the Tour’s first Official Betting Operator. Since teaming up, several possibilities have opened up for the two brands to collaborate on innovative projects.

“This momentous effort to pursue a first-of-its-kind sportsbook with the PGA Tour is a testament to the vision of both organizations,” said Kucharz.

He stated further that both organizations believe sports fans who want to legally bet on sporting events will benefit from the new sportsbook.

With the deal, DraftKings will become the exclusive sports betting partner for TPC Scottsdale’s annual event, the Waste Management Phoenix Open. DraftKings and the PGA Tour will also work together to create hospitality experiences and marketing initiatives for TPC Scottsdale.

The goal is to position the course as a global destination for sports bettors and fans of golf. For now, fans can check out daily fantasy golf contests and golf betting markets via the DraftKings’ iOS or Android app.

Arizona sports betting legislation

DraftKings and the PGA Tour are taking advantage of recent legislative developments in Arizona to prepare for sports betting legalization. SB 1797 passed in the state Senate this week and now waits on Governor Ducey’s signature to become law. It is expected that the governor will sign the measure as soon as the end of the week.

If approved, online and retail sports betting will be legalized. Professional sports facilities and tribal casinos can apply for licensing. The sports teams are eligible for up to ten licenses, while the tribes also receive ten licenses. The licensing for the tribes is contingent upon the approval of a re-negotiated compact.
