The wallet app of e-Naira digital currency appears to have been removed from the Google Play Store barely 48 hours after its launch by the Central Bank of Nigeria and President Muhammadu Buhari.

eNaira Removed from the Google Play Store

On Oct. 25, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) launched the digital wallet app of its central bank digital currency. With over 200,000 downloads in just 24 hours, the app appears to have been missing now from the Google Play Store, although it’s available on the Apple app store.

With a string of negative complaints from the customer ranging from the inability to link their Bank Verification Number, to getting a verification email, it’s not clear whether Google has removed the app due to the onus of poor ratings or the developer themselves have removed it.

In the meantime, the eNaira Speed Merchant wallet app, the mobile app for merchants is still available for download on android with its own string of bad reviews.

CBN Warns of Fake eNaira Social Media Handles

In the meantime, the Central Bank of Nigeria warned Wednesday to be wary of fake eNaira social media handles. In a statement signed by Osita Nwanisobi, Director of Corporate Communications of CBN, said:

“Following the formal launch of the eNaira on Monday, October 25, 2021, the attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been drawn to criminal and illegal activities of some individuals and a fraudulent twitter handle, @enaira_cbdc purported to belong to the bank.”

Per the statement, the fake social media handles and the impostors have been posting messages “related to the eNaira with the intent of wooing unsuspecting Nigerians with claims that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), among other falsities, is disbursing the sum of 50 billion eNaira currency.”

The eNaira was developed by the fintech company, Bitt, who had previously developed CBDC in some of the East Caribbean countries. At the launch on Monday, the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, stated that 500 million eNaira ($1.21 million) has already been minted.
