Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis Trailer Arrives, But You’ll Have To Wait Longer To Play It

A new Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis trailer has dropped on Final Fantasy’s official YouTube, with loads of gameplay footage to take a peek at. The good news comes with some bad news though: the game’s closed beta will not start until next summer.

Ever Crisis is the in-development free-to-play remake of Final Fantasy VII, though just calling it that might do a disservice to its scope.

All The Story In One Title

Ever Crisis covers events from the original game, Before Crisis, Crisis Core, Dirge Of Cerberus, and even the movie Advent Children. 

Before Crisis content alone might be of interest if you’re a committed fan of the series. The prequel only ever launched in Japan, and effectively ceased to exist in 2018 when its servers closed down. 

There’s also new content, with stories relating to Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier, and the childhoods of some of the FFVII characters. 

The different stories will release episodically, presumably to both give the game a stream of ongoing content, and to make development time manageable. 

The Classic Approach, With One Controversial Twist

From what we’ve seen so far in the Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis trailer , the game has taken a far more classic approach than the recent FFVII remake.

Battles use the old Active Time Battle system. It looks a lot like the original PlayStation Final Fantasy titles, with a graphical upgrade of course. 

The game even has smaller, toonier character models for the map and more realistic versions used in battle mode. This is a pretty adorable nod to the old games.

Is It Really Free Though?

It’s Final Fantasy VII, it’s a nostalgia trip, and it’s free. What’s not to like? Well, if you’re not a fan of loot boxes it might disappoint you to hear that they make an appearance.

You can win new costumes and weapons through gacha mechanics, which might be a turn-off for some. We’ll see how intrusive the gacha is in the long run.
