Ford Sells Big in February with 21.9 Percent Jump

The first set of February sales reports Wednesday in no way prepared anyone for the month that Ford Motor Co. enjoyed — a jump of 21.9%.

South Korean automakers Hyundai, Kia and Genesis set the bar high, with Hyundai leading the way with a record month and an increase of 9%, but Ford rode its popular Bronco, Explorer, Maverick and F-Series to a stunning result. Even Lincoln posted a positive result, rising 4% in February.

The Ford brand rose 22.8% last month as the Bronco jumped 112%, Explorer followed suit with a 100.4% increase and the Maverick rose 89.4%. However, the biggest impact was made by Ford’s biggest seller as its sales were up 21.5%. 

The company sold 54,995 F-Series trucks in February — 30% more than the company’s three other biggest sellers (by percentage increase) combined. Year-to-date sales of F-Series show an increase of 14.8%. 

Strong start

The company’s enjoyed good results through the first two months of 2023, with sales up 11.4% compared to the same period last year. EV sales have been up 87.9% while their internal combustion counterparts are also up 11%.

The automaker’s battery-electric star has been the F-150 Lightning, posting a nearly 3,300% jump in sales compared to 2022. To be fair, it sold 106 of the electric pickups to this point last year. That total is 3,600 vehicles in January and February.

Conversely, the Mustang Mach-E suffered a bit of a decline in February, dropping 10.9%, but it’s up slightly 0.9%, accounting for 4,409 units through the first two months. Fortunately for the automaker, not all Mustangs suffered in February. The gas-powered coupe jumped 5.5% last month.

Lincoln’s up for the year, 2.6%, as well as February. The brand offers four vehicles and two are selling well, Nautilus and Navigator, while the Corsair and Aviator are down for February and year-to-date. Lincoln dealers sold nearly 1,000 more Navigators last month than they did in February 2022: 1,242 units versus 375 utes.
