God of War was one of the PlayStation 4’s most popular releases, revitalising a series that many had written off to the annals of double-A anonymity. Therefore it’s no surprise that the PlayStation exclusive title is getting a sequel, which is currently known as God of War: Ragnarok. At this point we don’t know whether that’s the official title or just a placeholder, but anyone who reached the end of the 2018 game will know that Fimbulwinter is coming. And anyone who understands Norse mythology knows that Fimbulwinter precedes Ragnarok – otherwise known as the apocalypse.
We assume that we’ll be helping Kratos to stop the apocalypse, but you really never know with him. Santa Monica Studio wasn’t afraid to bend the established Norse mythology to suit its own ends in the first game, so we’re sure it has some surprises up its sleeves this time around, too.
With impending doom on the horizon, God of War: Ragnarok (or whatever it ends up being called) is set to be a landmark game for fans of mythology, action-adventure games, and gruff dads.

God of War: Ragnarok release date
God of War: Ragnarok is due to be released in 2022. Santa Monica Studio updated the release date from 2021 to 2022 via a tweet ahead of E3, but we have no other information as of yet. The studio says that the decision came because it “remains focused on delivering a top-quality game while maintaining the safety and wellbeing of our team, creative partners, and families.”
It seems even more likely that Horizon: Forbidden West will release before God of War: Ragnarok..
We’re hoping for more information around the time of E3 and the Summer Games Fest – although Sony is creating its own show rather than appearing at either of those events.

God of War: Ragnarok PS4
While the Ragnarok announcement was tagged onto the end of Sony’s PS5 showcase, developer David Jaffe seems to think that the game will incorporate a cross-gen launch, saying, “I’m sure the next God of War will be PS4 [and] PS5, of course it will.”

It’s worth noting that while Jaffe is known for his work on the first two God of War games, he is not confirmed to be working on Ragnarok. He also clarified his stance in a subsequent tweet, saying, “I can’t imagine [God of War: Ragnarok] not being made for both [PS4 and PS5], and I would be stunned if it didn’t ship on both.”
As of yet, it is unconfirmed whether God of War: Ragnarok will be a PS5 exclusive.
God of War: PS5 upgrade
In the meantime, God of War (2018) received a luscious next-gen update earlier this year, which lets you jump in with Kratos at 60 frames per second even at 4K resolution.
If you’re lucky enough to have got your hands one of the gold-dust consoles, then replaying God of War on your PS5 seems like the perfect way to while away the hours until Ragnarok is released.
