The Indian Aviation Ministry has offered clarification on the Delhi-London air fare controversy. According to a few media reports that came in the last two days, airfares for the Delhi-London route had touched up to Rs 4 lakh in August. But the ministry has said that there’s no proof of the same. All of this started after a tweet that came in from Sanjeev Gupta, Secretary of the Inter-State Council Secretariat, which said that airfares between Delhi and London have touched new highs for the economy class in August.

Aviation Ministry Says Media Reports Have No Base

Ministry of Civil Aviation tweeted that reports saying one-way fares between Delhi-London have reached up to Rs 4 lakh is baseless. The tweet also mentioned that the claim made by Sanjeev Gupta has been thoroughly checked by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The Ministry added that Delhi-London flights (economy class) tickets are ranging between Rs 1.03 and Rs 1.21 lakhs for the Indian airlines while for the international airlines, the price ranges between Rs 1.28 and Rs 1.47 lakhs. This price stat is for the month of August 2021.

As per the industry experts, the price of the fares of flights between Delhi-London will stay expensive given the fact that there are only limited number of flights operating on the route. For international flights, the price of the tickets can’t be regulated since the pricing is based on demand and supply. Because the number of flights to the UK from India is capped to a very low weekly limit, the price of the tickets will remain elevated.

The UK government had moved India from the ‘red’ list to the ‘amber’ list with effect Sunday (August 8, 2021). In the coming months, if things ease a little and the number of flights in the region increase, it will bring down the fare.
