Bookblocks.io, a non-fungible token (NFT) company, has teamed up with Women for Afghan Women, an organization based in New York, which focuses on promoting women’s access to education in Afghanistan and the United States.

The partnership comes after the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan that has limited the access of women to education.

Release an NFT to aid in Course

Bookblocks.io stated that it would release an NFT on October 5, and the proceeds made from the same of this NFT would be remitted to Women for Afghan Women. This not-for-profit organization also seeks to help women get vocational training that will enable them to seek jobs.

The NFT to be sold will be a piece of art with half of a woman’s face covered with one butterfly wing. The artwork also has a quote, “nothing is impossible to a determined woman.”

Bookblocks.io also stated that 100% of the proceeds raised from the sale of this NFT would be donated to the organization. The company will also mint 2200 copies of the artwork to represent the 2.2 million girls in Afghanistan who cannot attend school. The minimum price of these NFTs is 0.025 Ether (ETH).

Women Education Banned in Afghanistan

The Taliban rule in Afghanistan has always negatively affected women’s education in the country. In the 1990s, when the Taliban ruled the country, women and girls education were banned, and it seems that history has repeated itself.

As schools resume, the extremist Islamist group has only opened schools for men and boys. However, the Deputy Minister of Education, Zabihullah Mujahidwhile, has stated that women and girls will resume their education as soon as possible.

Women for Afghan Women has taken a central role in ensuring that women education is not oppressed. Naheed Samadi Bahram, the organization’s country director in the US, stated that “This is a generation that grew up hopeful and dreaming about their future through educational opportunities.”

She also added that the organization was committed to helping women and girls in Afghanistan access education and the Afghan refugees coming into the US.

The harsh Taliban rule that oppresses women and girls’ access to education has heavily been opposed on social media and by various global human rights organizations. However, some girls are still accessing online classes through Code to Inspire, an education hub that teaches them coding and robotics. However, these women risk imprisonment and beatings for going contrary to the Taliban laws.
