Oculus Quest 2 128GB Edition Confirmed, 64GB Model Discontinued

After rumours circulated last week that Facebook would be improving the base Oculus Quest 2 by upping its storage capacity from 64GB to 128GB, today there’s been confirmation. And in the most unlikely fashion. Sales of the headset have now been halted due to the facial interface issue with stock to be made available in August alongside the new model.

When the Oculus Quest 2 is back on sale from 24th August, the 128GB version will be available from day one, priced at £299 GBP/$299 USD – the same as the 64GB model. Facebook has said that sales of the Oculus Quest 2 64GB will end, of course, but hasn’t mentioned if any current stock will be sold at a reduced rate.

In a blog post, Andrew Bosworth Head of Facebook Reality Labs said: “We hope the larger storage size will give people more flexibility to instantly access and manage more content on a single device.” As anyone with a 64GB headset will know, after a while some storage management is required with older games needing to be deleted to make way for new ones. This wouldn’t be an issue if Oculus Quest 2 had expandable storage but alas that’s not the case.

Generally speaking, VR titles aren’t that big for the Oculus Quest platform, most tend to be around 1GB. Some newer ones are pushing that ever higher, Sniper Elite VR and Larcenauts both come in at just over 3GB while Myst is a whopping 9GB. And those numbers are going to continue to climb as developers create bigger and more immersive experiences.

When the 128GB model does become available in a few weeks at least you’ll get a free silicone cover to go over the foam facial interface. While a small number of users have reported skin irritation due to the foam, that has led Facebook to act, ensuring all owners should have a comfortable experience.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of the Oculus Quest 2, reporting back with further updates.
