One Player to Know on Each 2023 NCAA Tournament Team

The NCAA Tournament is nearing, and with it, a chance for many unknown players to get the spotlight. What players do fans need to know heading into the 2023 NCAA Tournament? Here is the one player to know on each 2023 NCAA Tournament team.

South Region

1. Alabama Crimson Tide- Brandon Miller, F

Miller has been the best freshman in the country this season after averaging 19.5 points and 8.5 rebounds. He is likely headed to the NBA, but will want to notch some big games in the NCAA Tournament before he heads that way.

16. Texas A&M Corpus Christi- Trevian Tennyson, G

Tennyson is scoring 15.7 points per game and shooting 41.2 percent from 3-point range. He could hae a huge game in the First Four.

16. Southeast Missouri Redhawks- Phillip Russell, G

Finding a player who can generate as much offense as Russell isn’t easy. He is averaging 18.2 points and five assists per game.

8. Maryland Terrapins- Jahmir Young, G

Young leads the Terrapins in points, assists and steals. He isn’t the greatest shooter from deep, so expect him to attack the basket.

9. West Virginia Mountaineers- Tre Mitchell, F

He has bounced around from UMass to Texas to West Virginia. Mitchell is averaging 11.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. He can even stretch the floor a bit for the Mountaineers at 37.9 percent from deep.

5. San Diego State Aztecs- Matt Bradley, G

The Aztecs only have one player who scores in double figures, Matt Bradley. He averages 12.9 points per game on a team that is well-balanced.

12. Charleston Cougars- Ryan Larson, G

After starting his career at Wofford, Larson transferred to Charleston and has impressed. He scores 10.6 points per game while leading the team in assists and steals. Larson will be running the show for the Cougars.

4. Virginia Cavaliers- Kihei Clark, G

Clark is a familiar name from some past Virginia tournament runs. He averages 10.9 points per game, but more importantly, is a floor general with 5.4 assists per game.

13. Furman Paladins- Mike Bothwell, G

Furman has a great offense and Bothwell leads the way at 18 points per game.

6. Creighton Blue Jays- Ryan Kalkbrenner, F

Kalkbrenner missed some time this season, but has been great for the Blue Jays down the stretch. He scores well at 15.4 points per game, but also protects the rim well too at 2.2 blocks per game.

11. NC State Wolfpack- Terquavion Smith, G

After flirting with entering the NBA Draft Smith decided to return to school. He has not disappointed. Smith is leading the team in scoring, assists and steals at 17.5, 4.2 and 1.5 respectively.

3. Baylor Bears- Keyonte George, G

George was a highly-touted recruit who has lived up to the hype. He leads the Bears in scoring at 15.8 points per game.

14. UCSB Gauchos- Ajay Mitchell, G

Mitchell fills up the stat-sheet as he leads the Gauchos in points, assists and steals.

7. Missouri Tigers- D’Moi Hodge, G

After Dennis Gates left Cleveland State for Missouri, Hodge followed. He is the second-leading scorer, but also has been a good defender for the Tigers.

10. Utah State Aggies- Steven Ashworth, G

Ashworth is another one of the players on the list that leads the team in points, assists and steals. If the tournament truly is about who has the better guards, Ashworth gives Utah State a chance.

2. Arizona Wildcats- Azuolas Tubelis, F

Not only is Tubelis the best player on Arizona, he is one of the best players in the country. He puts up 19.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.

15. Princeton Tigers- Tosan Evbuomwan, F

Evbuomwan is a forward, but he is able to set his teammates up well. He is averaging 14.8 points and 4.9 assists per game.

Midwest Region

1. Houston Cougars- Marcus Sasser, G

Sasser was injured during the AAC Tournament, but it doesn’t look to be serious. He leads the Cougars in scoring at 17.1 points per game and will have to be healthy for the Cougars to go on a run.

16. Northern Kentucky- Marques Warrick, G

Warrick has improved every season at NKU and is now averaging 19.1 points per game.

8. Iowa Hawkeyes- Kris Murray, F

After his brother Keegan went to the NBA, Kris has stepped his game up. He is scoring 20.4 points and hauling in 7.9 rebounds per game.

9. Auburn Tigers- Wendell Green Jr., G

Green scores 13.8 points per game, but also sets the table for the offense at 4.2 assists per game.

5. Miami Hurricanes- Isaiah Wong, G

Wong had the opportunity to go pro, but returned to Miami and led them to a share of an ACC title. He scores 16.2 points per game.

12. Drake Bulldogs- Tucker Devries, G

The Bulldogs won the MVC Tournament behind Devries scoring over 20 points in two different contests. He averages 19 points per game.

4. Indiana Hoosiers- Trayce Jackson-Davis, F

Jackson-Davis does a little bit of everything for the Hoosiers, as he leads the team in points, rebounds, assists and blocks. At 20.8 points and 10.9 rebounds per game, Jackson-Davis is averaging a double-double.

13. Kent State Golden Flashes- Sincere Carry, G

Carry has averaged by 17.6 points per game, but has struggled against both Gonzaga and Houston this season. He will want to make up for it against Indiana.

6. Iowa State Cyclones- Gabe Kalscheur, G

He started his career at Minnesota, but Kalscheur played a huge role on Iowa State’s team last season. Kalscheur scored 22 points in the Cyclones’ win over Wisconsin in the second round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament.

11. Mississippi State Bulldogs- Tolu Smith, F

The Bulldogs are one of the worst three-point shooting teams in the country, which means their inside game is crucial. Smith has been a star for the Bulldogs at 15.8 points per game.

11. Pittsburgh Panthers- Blake Hinson, F

Hinson is tied for the team lead in scoring at 15.6 points and also leads the team with 6.2 rebounds per game.

7. Texas A&M Aggies- Wade Taylor IV, G

The SEC didn’t have too many standouts at guard, but Taylor IV was one of the best. He averages 16.2 points and four assists per game.

10. Penn State Nittany Lions- Jalen Pickett, G

Pickett is involved in everything for the Nittany Lions, as he leads the team in points, assists, rebounds and steals.

2. Texas Longhorns- Marcus Carr, G

Texas has had to adjust on the fly this season when Chris Beard was fied, but Carr has steadied the team. He scores 15.9 points per game and will have the ball in his hands if the Longhorns need a clutch paly.

15. Colgate Raiders- Tucker Richardson, G

Richardson ranks sixth in the nation in assists so watch him set up his teammates.

West Region

1. Kansas Jayhawks- Jalen Wilson, F

Wilson was a key member of the National Championship team last year, but has only improved this year. They’ll need to lean on him in the tournament.

16. Howard Bison- Elijah Hawkins, G

While he leads the team in scoring, the more impressive thing is that Hawkins ranks 12th in the country in assists per game.

8. Arkansas Razorbacks- Nick Smith Jr., G

Smith was injured and was only able to play in 14 games. He averages 14 points per game and if he is healthy he could be the key to a Razorback run this March.

9. Illinois Fighting Illini- Terrence Shannon Jr., G

After being a key part of some of the Texas Tech teams that made runs in March. Shannon is now averaging 17.1 points per game.

5. St. Mary’s Gaels- Logan Johnson, G

Johnson leads the Gaels in points, rebounds and assists as he controls the pace.

12. VCU Rams- Adrian Baldwin Jr., G

While he leads the team in scoring in 12.6 points per game, he is also eighth in the country in steals per game.

4. UConn Huskies- Adama Sanogo, F

The Huskies have a constant force on the interior in Sanogo, who scores 16.8 points and grabs 7.3 rebounds per game.

13. Iona Gaels- Walter Clayton Jr., G

He is leading the team with 16.9 points per game, but his efficiency is astounding. Clayton is shooting over 95 percent from the free-throw line and 42 percent from 3-point range.

6. TCU Horned Frogs- Mike Miles Jr., G

Miles is averaging 17.3 points this season and averaged 20.5 points per game in the 2022 NCAA Tournament.

11. Arizona State Sun Devils- Desmond Cambridge Jr., G

He may be mistaken for his brother on the court, who also plays for the Sun Devils, but Desmond is the team’s leading scorer at 13.7 points per game.

11. Nevada Wolf Pack- Jarod Lucas, G

Although he has had some down games this season, Lucas has had three-straight 20-point games heading into the NCAA Tournament.

3. Gonzaga Bulldogs- Drew Timme, F

It seems like Timme has been at Gonzaga forever so he has some name recognition. He also has led one of the best offenses in the country with 20.9 points per game. His footwork in the post is tough to match.

14. Grand Canyon Lopes- Rayshon Harrison, G

Harrison transferred to GCU from Presbyterian and has averaged over 17 points per game in three different college seasons.

7. Northwestern Wildcats- Boo Buie, G

Buie has a fun name to say, but is also averaging 17.1 points per game this season.

10. Boise State Broncos- Marcus Shaver Jr., G

Shaver is in his sixth season of college eligibility and led the Broncos to the NCAA Tournament last season. He is leading the team in rebounds and assists.

2. UCLA Bruins- Jaime Jaquez Jr., G

UCLA will be down their best defender Jaylen Wright due to injury, so Jaquez will have to pick it up on both ends of the floor to get back to a Final Four for the second time of his career.

15. UNC Asheville Bulldogs- Drew Pember, F

Pember averages 20.9 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game. He ranks 14th for points per game in the country.

East Region

1. Purdue Boilermakers- Zach Edey, C

Edey has developed into the best player in the country. With averages of 22.1 points and 12.8 points it will be hard for anyone to matchup with the 7-foot-4 center.

16. Texas Southern Tigers- Joirdon Karl Nicholas, F

Nicholas is one of four players who average double figures for the Tigers, but also leads the team in rebounding.

16. Fairleigh Dickinson Knights- Demetre Roberts, G

The Knights rely on Roberts to lead them in scoring and assists.

8. Memphis Tigers- Kendric Davis, G

The nation’s 12th-leading scorer also leads the team in assists at 5.7 per game.

9. Florida Atlantic Owls- Johnell Davis, G

Florida Atlantic only has three players scoring in double figures and Davis leads the way at 13.9 points per game.

5. Duke Blue Devils- Kyle Filipowski, C

Filipowski wasn’t the best recruit in Duke’s great class, but he has been the most effective, as he leads the team in points, rebounds and steals per game.

12. Oral Robert Golden Eagles- Max Abmas, G

On Oral Roberts Sweet 16 run a few years ago, Abmas led the way. He is now scoring 22.2 points per game for the team and is the leading scorer in the tournament.

4. Tennessee Volunteers- Santiago Vescovi, G

While Vescovi is the leading scorer, with Zakai Zeigler out for the season, Vescovi is going to have to play very well for Tennessee to advance past the first weekend.

13. Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns- Jordan Brown, F

Brown is one of the best-scoring forwards in the tournament at 19.4 points per game.

6. Kentucky Wildcats- Oscar Tshiebwe, F

Tshiebwe was the National Player of the Year last season. This season, he has still scored and rebounded well, but his defense will be put to the test in the tournament.

11. Providence Friars- Bryce Hopkins, F

Hopkins transferred from Kentucky after not getting much playing time. Now he is standing out at Providence, which creates a great storyline.

3. Kansas State Wildcats- Keyontae Johnson, F

After having to sit out a few years with a heart condition at Florida, Johnson has returned to college basketball in a big way. He is averaging 17.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.

14. Montana State Bobcats- RaeQuan Battle, G

Battle led the team in scoring all season, but really upped his game in the Big Sky Tournament, as he scored 21 points per game.

7. Michigan State Spartans- A.J. Hoggard, G

Hoggard ranks 10th in the country for assists per game at 6.1 and will have to protect the ball for Michigan State to advance.

10. USC Trojans- Boogie Ellis, G

USC has two players who score in double-figures and Ellis leads the team with 18 points per game.

2. Marquette Golden Eagles- Tyler Kolek, G

Kolek is second in the country in assists per game and first in the tournament. He controls the pace and sets his teammates up for plenty of open shots.

15. Vermont Catamounts- Dylan Penn, G

Penn was on Bellarmine last season and although they won their conference tournament they were not eligible for the big dance. Now he gets his chance as Vermont’s leading scorer.
