Player Guide (2020): How to Play Dota 2’s Diretide Event

As Valve announced the release of Diretide 2020, the community was excited and apprehensive at the same time. How could Valve outdo the great Diretide event last seen in 2013? It seems Valve’s efforts have paid off as Diretide 2020 has released to positive reviews. 

What is Diretide?

Diretide is back in Dota 2 after nearly seven years. 

Diretide is a best-of-five custom game mode where the first team to win three rounds takes the victory. While that’s the basic version of the Diretide gameplay, there is a lot more complexity to it. Dota 2 players will find Unikrn’s Diretide guide handy before they dive into the candy-filled world of Diretide. Thousands of players would compete to claim the Baby Roshan courier rewards in 2012.

The game mode returned in 2013, although not without some efforts by the community. The call for Diretide 2013 had risen to such a crescendo that Volvo, the carmaker, also messaged Valve to give Dota 2 players a repeat of the special event. And Valve obliged. 

But the game mode did not return in 2014. Dota 2 players still wanted the game mode, but Valve had other plans. Seven years later, Diretide has returned to Dota 2 in 2020.The 2020 game mode retains most of the format of the original Diretide event in 2012/13. There are many more rewards this year with new skins, cosmetics, audio files and a brand new, spooky map. 

How to Play Diretide

Players who started Dota 2 after 2014 probably have no idea what Diretide is or why it is the most hype event in Dota 2. Its not difficult and the game mode works on the age-old concept of distributing and collecting candies during Halloween. Roshan is in on the act as well as he roams around the map demanding candies from players on both teams.

Collect Taffy/Candies

Farm Creeps

Creeps drop taffy on death. 

The simple way to get taffies is by farming creeps. If you get the last hit on a dying creep, the candy will drop to you. Players should also collect candies from dead lanes (no heroes present) as every number matters. 

Kill Opponents Carrying Candies

Finally, players can kill opponents who are already carrying candies. An opponent carrying a significant stack of candies has lower HP and is an easier target. 

Hit the Scarecrow

There are two scarecrows on the map.

The scarecrow is a new addition in Diretide 2020. Every few minutes, two scarecrows will appear on the top and the bottom half of the map. Players should hit the scarecrow and a bunch of candies will drop after the scarecrow is destroyed.

All heroes in the zone will receive some candies, it is important to make sure you have complete control of the area before you take down the scarecrow. 

Deposit Candies in Bucket

Players should deposit the candies in the candy basket. 

Collecting candies is just the first step. It doesn’t matter if you have a hundred collected candies if you don’t deposit the candies in the bucket before the end of the round. In fact, Unikrn would advise players to not hold more than ten to fifteen candies at any given point in time. The more candies that a player holds, the lower his HP pool, the higher bounty on him (candy wise) and the greater chances of giving the enemy an insurmountable advantage. 

Feed Roshan Before he Smashes Your Teammates

When Roshan comes calling, players should feed him candies to temporarily satisfy him. 

Roshan wants candy. And Dota 2 players have the candy. Or they better have it when Roshan comes asking. Cause otherwise, Roshan will curse your team, applying a debuff on the entire team. Players don’t want that as it will mean that you lose more candy to the opponents who will be more than ready to pounce on the opportunity. 

Raid Enemy Home Bucket

After Roshan leaves his pit, players can find power runes in the pit at regular intervals.

The final way to get candies is to raid the enemy’s candy basket. The candy weel needs to be destroyed before players can steal candies from the enemy bucket. It’s important to keep an eye on both the lanes and prevent either lane from being pushed in. 

What Are the Dota 2 Diretide Rewards?

The Diretide rewards have cosmetics with unique Diretide effects. Some of the most popular ones include Bane, Shadow Shaman, Undying and Phantom Lancer. Here’s DotaCinema’s video highlighting the various sets and their effects in-game.

These items are available in the Hallowed Chest of the Diretide. Players need to purchase a key ($2.50) that will unlock the chest. Dota 2 players can also trade up items by pooling together ten items of one tier and trading up to an item of a higher quality. 

Diretide will be available in Dota 2 till December 22, 2020.
