Raiders to Bench Derek Carr in Week 17

The Las Vegas Raiders have chosen to bench their starting quarterback in Week 17’s game against the 49ers. This is a potential money-saving move, as Carr will be guaranteed over $40 million if he gets injured.

PFF’s Ari Meirov reported the news via Twitter on Wednesday afternoon.

Las Vegas can move Carr and his contract at the end of the season, and keeping him healthy will not only save them cap money, but allow them to trade him more easily. He’ll count as $5.6 million in dead cap, but that balloons to over $45 million if they trade him after he fails a physical.

Carr is 6-9 in the games he’s started this year, completing less than 61 percent of his passes for 3,522 yards, 24 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. This is perhaps his worst year as an established starter; a far cry from his three-straight Pro Bowl seasons from 2015-2017.
