Earn real-world cash by designing your own full-body, animated costumes and selling them to other players.

Since launching its Creator Compensation program this past February, mega-popular social VR platform Rec Room has been making it increasingly easy for creators to profit off their in-game creations by cashing out tokens for real-world money. This includes everything from premium inventions to keys.

A couple of months ago, we sat down with Rec Room Inc. CEO and Co-Founder Nick Fajt to learn more about the companies approach to user-generated content and the potential industry shift towards premium subscription services.

“Maybe back in 2017, we started adding these user-generated content features. The community was so creative and they were begging for some of these features,” said Fajt. “We think that’s amazing. It led us to think through how could we reward those players who are building the best content. Then we started seeing players earning quite a bit of in-game currency and so we wanted to provide them even further incentives. And so we said, ‘Hey, we’ll actually buy it back from you under these circumstances.’”

Today, the company announced yet another way for Rec Room Plus subscribers to profit off their in-game creations: animated costumes.

This latest update will allow players to create and sell full-body animated wardrobes, whether it be original outfits or recognizable costumes from popular media. Animated costumes should work in the same vein as premium inventions and keys, which can be traded with other players for in-game tokens, which can then be converted into real money.

The company states that it hopes to pay out $1M to creators by the end of 2021. The platform already boasts over five million player-created rooms, making it one of the more comprehensive social VR platforms currently on the market.

Recently, it was revealed that the official Rec Room app would be heading to Android devices this fall, offering cross-compatible play with every other available platform, including SteamVR, PS VR, Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest, iOS, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and PC via Steam. Combine this news with a recent fundraising round in which the company was valued at a staggering $1.25 billion, and the future is looking very bright for Rec Room.
