Small New York City town wants to ban crypto mining for 3 months

According to WWNY-TV, Massena, a small town in New York, is planning to implement a temporary three-month ban on new cryptocurrency mining in the area.

The town’s supervisor, Steve O’Shaughnessy, is strongly considering this plan because crypto mining equipment has been cluttering Massena’s street, calling them a sea of boxes.

“We just want to make sure if they’re going to come here, that it’s a nice presentable building,” O’Shaughnessy said.

A rising crypto hub

The “sea of boxes” that O’Shaughnessy is complaining about is also a clear sign of Massena’s rising status as one of the fastest rising crypto hubs in the United States.

Because of the town’s hydroelectricity that provides a cheap source of energy, the residents have taken advantage of this asset by starting their own crypto mining operations.

One more fascinating fact about the town of Massena is it also houses the biggest cryptocurrency data center in the world, which is operated by CoinMint. The data center was built on the town’s abandoned smelter and the company got approval from Massena to establish its facility last 2018.

The struggling town was happy to welcome CoinMint back then, but the consequences of crypto mining are starting to dawn on Massena this year.

Also, the clutter being brought by crypto mining is one of the reasons why China has been ramping up its efforts to dismantle its own people’s crypto operations.

A bit about Massena

The town of Massena is located near the border between the United States and Canada. Massena got its name from its first European settler, Amable Faucher, who named it after one of Napoleon I’s marshals, André Massena.
