Global consulting engineering firm Stanley Consultants and Resilient Analytics won four national awards for contributions to furthering sustainable engineering from two publications owned by Environmental Business International, a research and publishing company.

The Environmental Business Journal gave Stanley Consultants a Business Achievement Award in the mergers and acquisitions category for acquiring Boulder climate science firm Resilient Analytics. The magazine also awarded Resilient Analytics, a Stanley Consultants company, a Project Merit Award in the climate change category for its Boulder County equity map.

The Climate Change Business Journal gave Stanley Consultants its Business Achievement Award for New Practice-Climate Science and Resilient Analytics received a Project Merit Award for its heat impact in schools study.

Stanley Consultants won its awards in the mergers and acquisitions categories for acquiring and integrating Resilient Analytics, a Boulder, Colo.-based leader in analysis and application of climate science for the built and natural environment. In alignment with Stanley Consultants’ strategic plan, the acquisition adds specialist adaptation and resiliency capabilities, services and technologies to its offerings.

“We are committed to making investments that fulfill our purpose of improving lives,” said Kate Harris, Stanley Consultants president, CEO and chair of the board. “The integration of Resilient Analytics underpins our dedication to providing data-driven environmental, social and governance (ESG) insights, that deliver sustainable energy and infrastructure solutions to our clients.”

The two Resilient Analytics projects that won awards included a comprehensive study of national heat impact on K-12 schools. U.S. schools are not equipped for the extreme heat caused by climate change and struggle to cope with overheated classrooms and inadequate cooling systems. Over the last several years, schools have been forced to take heat days because classrooms are too hot. Temperature projections indicate this problem will worsen over the next two decades.

“Our team is honored to have our work recognized at the national level,” said Dr. Paul Chinowsky director of analytics and resiliency for Resilient Analytics. “The results of this work are important advancements that will serve as a model for other organizations to reach their resiliency goals, protect against climate impacts and plan for a safe and sustainable future.”

Resilient Analytics also conducted a multi-year study on the projected impacts of climate change on daily life in Boulder County, Colo. The study bridges the gap to localization by creating an actionable GIS-based visualization of Boulder County that allows personnel to communicate at a neighborhood level the risks of climate change, appropriate risk mitigation options and essential adaptation strategies. The new visualizations have revealed key areas where climate adaptation assistance is required, with a focus on underserved and vulnerable populations.

“In a rather tumultuous year of economic ups and downs in 2022, a number of companies set themselves apart with performance, transactions or projects,” said Grant Ferrier, editor of Environmental Business Journal and chair of the selection committee.

“With energy transition, climate resilience and new federal programs driving business, as well as traditional environmental market drivers in infrastructure, air quality, remediation, water and wastewater, it is understandable that most companies report growing demand for technology and services,” Ferrier added.
