Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for December 22nd, 2022. In today’s article, we’ve once again got several new releases to check out. There were a couple of solid shadow drops, but there isn’t a whole lot very exciting beyond that. We’ll go through everything anyway, because that’s what we do. After that, we have an assortment of new sales to look at along with a few expiring ones. Let’s get jolly!

New Releases

Sail Forth ($19.99)

Who’s up for a high seas adventure? Sail Forth sure looks like a cool one, too. Explore a huge ocean, discover various islands and their inhabitants, and build your fleet of ships as you pursue loot and and solve mysteries. This one looks to have a lot of elements packed into it, and I’m hoping to dive in deep for a full review soon.

Sonority ($19.99)

Esther embarks on a quest to help out her friend, but unlike other adventurers she isn’t packing a sword and shield. No, Esther has brought her pan flute with her. And it’s a lucky thing she did, as it turns out all of the puzzles in this game involve music. You’ll have to use your musical ear (oh well that’s me out) or symbols (oh thank goodness, I am saved) to arrange the musical notes in the correct order to make your way forward. It certainly has a gimmick to call its own, but I’d have to put my hands on the game to tell you how well it works.

Arcade Archives Metal Hawk ($7.99)

This 1988 Namco release is another interesting variant on the shooter genre. You pilot a helicopter and need to make your away around maps destroying various targets. You can change your elevation, which is accompanied by a scaling effect. The arcade cabinet was produced in very limited numbers and it never had any home ports before now, so this is a rather nice rarity.

Windstorm: An Unexpected Arrival ($29.99)

Another horse game, and I’d imagine this is rather similar to the previous Windstorm release. Build your archery and riding skills and take part in fifteen quests set at the Kaltenbach estate, or just ride around and explore as you like. Fans of Windstorm or just general horse lovers will probably find things to like here.

Grappling Dash ($9.99)

EpiXR finds yet another way to trot out its Aery engine, this time with a grappling hook theme. Use your handy grapple gun to move from point to point in several large stages, sniffing out secrets as you go. You can only grapple on to crystals at set positions, so it isn’t quite as freeform as you might think. Well, I’m sure some people will dig it.

Popplings ($5.99)

This is a competitive puzzle game that seems to be throwing back to early 90s PC games visually. This is an aesthetic that I am sure appeals to some folks, but it doesn’t do a lot for me. Anyway, it looks to be a fairly conventional spin on a color matching game, with you shooting pieces from the bottom of the well and trying to clear pieces. It has local multiplayer support in addition to its story mode, plus a puzzle editor mode that allows you to make your own. Could be fun.

A Maiden Astrologer Divines the Future ($8.70)

Here’s another visual novel, this one about a maiden astrologer who gets swept up a series of events after she is visited by a girl named Maki. The game description in the eShop doesn’t give me much confidence about the quality of the localization here, which is becoming a bit of a problem with these lower-cost visual novel releases of late.

Kawaii Slime Arena ($5.99)

This is a, er, modest arena shooter where you play as an anime girl who has to shoot slimes. There are a number of different weapons you can unlock and use, among other power-ups and equipment that can be earned. Probably not going to win any Keighleys anytime soon, but I’m sure some people will have at least a bit of fun with it.

Words in Word ($9.99)

Yes, that’s a word game alright. Find the words in the words. There are more than a thousand words to find words in, which is a lot of words. And yet here I am struggling to find words to describe this. It offers a local co-op multiplayer mode so you can bring in a friend to look for words while you’re looking for words in words.

Drone Race Simulator Pilot Flight School Airplane Games Jet 2023 ($4.99)

Another piece of Purple Monkey Dishwasher garbage from VG Games, the publisher who has never ever heard of Midnight Works. Race some drones. I recommend saving your fiver for almost anything else. Anything.
