Skulls & Bones can’t seem to catch a break, as it’s been delayed. Again. After the huge success of the pirate-themed Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag (aka, This Time It’s Pirates), the company set out to make a series focused on pirates and nothin’ but pirates. That sentence has the word “pirate” in it four times. A bit much, maybe. Unfortunately for any fans who wish to take to the high seas, development has been rocky, resulting in multiple delays that have threatened to sink the title. Heh, see what I did there? In case you were expecting the last delay to lead to some smooth sailing (yes), I regret to inform you that a 2021 release has walked the plank (YES), and that the game has been delayed yet again.
Ubisoft had its yearly earnings report today, which naturally contained information on several of its key titles. The report didn’t mention much about Skull & Bones, only saying that it would be moved to Ubisoft’s 2022-2023 fiscal year. This means that the game could very well finally set sail (I’m not sorry) in 2023. But the waters may continue to be rough, and it’s quite possible that the game’s delay woes haven’t yo’d their last ho. Look, I’m making a lot of these, but c’mon.
Skull & Bones delayed until maybe 2023 this time
Skull & Bones was originally announced back in 2017. It’s set to be an open-world pirate adventure with both a single-player campaign and tactical PvP. It’s set to include such features as ship collecting and using the direction of the wind to propel your vessel forward. Which is, yeah, a thing boats do.
There’s also a multiplayer mode where players look for treasure. This is, of course, charted territory, as the game will have to contend with Sea of Thieves when it finally emerges from development hell. It’s been a long voyage for Ubisoft, so I just hope the title doesn’t end up in Davy Jones’ Locker.
