Survey: More schools are opting for hybrid model

Twenty percent of school and district leaders say they are planning to reopen schools under hybrid models — an increase from 10% the previous month — according to a survey from the EdWeek Research Center. The increase comes as the number of coronavirus cases is rising because of the Delta variant.

AI-enabled aids could support teaching, learning

Bill contains broadband subsidy for students

The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, advanced by the Senate, contains a provision to create the Affordable Connectivity Program, which would provide low-income college students discounts for broadband. Under the program, Pell Grant recipients would be eligible for $30 subsidies toward the purchase of high-speed internet.

New Hampshire Education Commissioner Frank Edelblut is taking several steps to help schools prepare for challenges caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Such steps are transitioning to Canvas’ learning management system and Discovery Education’s K-12 learning platform, establishing small-group learning pods and providing tutoring.

One of the changes brought about by the pandemic is a greater emphasis on remote education during teacher training, says Jennifer Krawec of the University of Miami. Colleges and universities across the country are training future teachers to incorporate digital tools into the classroom, create virtual lesson materials and use videoconferencing software, so they are prepared to teach remote as well as in-person students.
