How to pick the best VPS provider?
In order to find the best VPS hosting out there, we tested many providers on several different metrics. When you’ll
be picking your preferred provider, make sure that you pay attention to all of these things:
Virtual Private Server performance
The most important thing is performance – a VPS is supposed to be fast!
But how do you know if the provider is fast? Well, there are two metrics to look at:
- Uptime percentage shows how often the server stays up. Ideally, it should be as physically
close to 100% as possible. 99.95% is alright, and everything below 99.91% should be thrown out of the window.
Look at the test results and compare them with Service Level Agreements (SLA) provided by the host. - Response time shows how long servers take to respond to a request (just any “ping” sent their
way). In this metric, we’re looking for stability and speed. The faster, the better – but if the response time
is under 600ms, you’re in good hands.
Naturally, you can’t know these results without actually using the service. That’s why we’ve done all the heavy
lifting for you, and included our test site performance results. Follow them, or simply use the money-back
guarantees available with each provider to test everything yourself!
Ease of use: managed vs unmanaged VPS
VPS is often regarded as an advanced option for developers. While they most certainly benefit from the added
customizability and sheer power, VPS can also be a great tool for beginners!
How so?
Well, VPS can be separated into three distinct types:
- Unmanaged VPS: a bare server and basic details on how to reach it – that’s all you get. By
managing VPS through the console, you take care of everything: setups, security, applications. It’s the cheapest
option out there, but you need to absolutely know what you’re doing. - Semi-managed VPS: in most cases, this will get you the most basic setup and some sort of
control panel. Freedom of server configuration is all yours, but the setup process is a lot more easier. - Fully-managed VPS: provider does everything. You get a lovely graphic interface to manage your
server, often leaving you just with the burden of building your website. This is an option perfect for
beginners, as learning everything should be seriously simple.
As prices go, the more work the provider does, the more expensive it gets. So, expect managed options to be
more expensive than unmanaged ones. Even then, you can still find some excellent managed options on a
budget.
Your project’s needs
Many people choose a VPS due to the increased power and resources that it gives. So, when picking out the right plan
for you, make sure you pick the option that offers enough.
Here are some examples of how much of each main resource you can possibly need:
- Storage space: it’s pretty straightforward. A small site will take up comfortably under 5 GB.
Meanwhile, an eCommerce website, complete with a massive amount of data, can easily expand to 50 GB and more. - Bandwidth: each visitor coming to your site uses this resource to transfer data back and forth.
So the calculation here is simple – the more
users you have, the more bandwidth you need. Count just how much data loading one page requires, then multiply
that to a number of visitors you get every month. Most VPS providers here offer bandwidths of 1 TB and more – so
you can have a lot of visitors before you need to upgrade. - CPU: it’s the main resource that shows how powerful the server is. Not all hosting providers
specify exactly what CPUs they use, but in most cases, the plans will be differentiated by how many CPU cores
you get access to. 1 core should be enough for regular smaller websites, 2 cores will be perfect for running
several bigger projects on one server – and you can go even further. - RAM: each piece of software that you use takes up RAM. So, if you plan to run several
applications on your server, make sure to get a plan with sufficient RAM. Basic WordPress sites need around 512
MB of RAM, and all VPS plan on this list come with 1 GB as a minimum. 2 GB is a good upgrade – if you wish to
build more projects and use more software.
All the entry VPS plans on this list are optimized for medium-sized eCommerce websites with constant influx of
traffic. They all have at least 1 GB of RAM, and 1 TB of bandwidth.
But you can go even further – and choose a plan, best suited for your goals and skill level. Pick whichever you like
most, and make your projects bigger and faster than ever before.
