What Liverpool’s Historic Win Over Manchester United Means

Liverpool’s historic 7-0 win over Manchester United this Sunday was historic. Liverpool handed the Manchester team their worst Premier League loss in the club’s 140-year history. With the win over Manchester, Liverpool has to continue this streak they’re building.

Shifting In The Table

This game was one that was circled on both teams’ calendars, not due to the dislike each fanbase harbors towards one another, but due to the positioning on the table. Before the game, Liverpool sat at sixth and United sat at third.

A win for Liverpool would move them into fifth over Newcastle and sitting behind Tottenham with a game still to be played. A win for Manchester United would’ve meant staying in the title race with Arsenal and their Manchester rivals, Manchester City.

Fans from both sides were expecting a fairly even battle; however, no one could’ve predicted a punishing 7-0 win for the Reds. The win was not only a step in the right direction for Liverpool but a jump in the right direction.

The first half was very back-and-forth, until right before half Cody Gakpo curled an excellent shot in the corner, out of reach of De Gea’s glove. At a 1-0 half, the game looked within reach. Liverpool’s second half explosion blew the winds in their favor, netting six additional goals.

Salah Scores Two, Passes Fowler All-Time

Salah scored two, Núñez scored two, Gakpo scored two and Roberto Firmino scored one. Salah’s two goals made him the top scorer for Liverpool in history, passing Robbie Fowler. Salah spoke with reporters after the game, “This record was in my mind since I came here. After my first season, I was always chasing that record so to get it today against Man United with that result is incredible.”

By Liverpool’s victory today, they’re within reach of the top four after an arguably abysmal season. A season that was to be forgotten in the minds of all Liverpool fans has been turned around into a possibility for the Champions League next season.

Alisson’s Heroics and Liverpool’s Defense

Liverpool’s defense and Alisson specifically have been on a tear in their last five PL games. Sunday’s game marks the fifth consecutive clean sheet. Alisson finished the game with four saves, with the other four shots missing net. However, today’s game was proof of Konaté and van Dijk’s excellence in the CB position.

Robertson and Alexander-Arnold played excellently as well, demonstrating their incredible defense.

The midfield, which has been a large question mark on the Red’s season woes, showed out today. Harvey Elliot played incredible, despite many questions on his role with Stefan Bajčetić’s rise through the club’s hierarchy.

Where To Go For Man United

After riding the high of coming home with the Carabao Cup last week, Liverpool’s victory put a sour taste in Manchester United’s mouth. It’s arguable the loss at Anfield took away their hopes of reinserting themselves into the title race.

With the title race now just out of reach, United turns to focus on the retention of its position in the table. Manchester United now hopes to turn the bitter taste in their mouth onto Real Betis in the Europa League. Also still in the FA Cup race, the Manchester fans still have a lot to look forward to.

After allowing this win to marinate in the minds of Liverpool players and fans fully, their eyes will drift to Bournemouth next Saturday, where they handed them a 9-0 loss in their first matchup. The 9-0 win against Bournemouth tied a Premier League record for the largest goal difference in a single game.
