POKUKANJE:
- 40,000 Bitcoins from wallets linked to the US government are on the move.
- The move raises questions about the government’s stance on cryptocurrency.
- Ex-SilkRoad engineer Zhong stole BTC in 2013 via a code loophole.
okoli 40,000 Bitcoin (BTC) worth over $2 billion from wallets associated with US Government law enforcement seizures have been observed to be on the move. As of now, most of these transactions appear to be internal transfers.

However, one particular transfer has caught the attention of the crypto community, as approximately 9,861 BTC, which were seized from the Silk Road hacker, have been sent to a Coinbase cluster.
Silk Road was a darknet Trg where illegal drugs, fake IDs, and other illicit goods were sold for Bitcoin. In 2013, the FBI shut down the site and arrested its founder, Ross Ulbricht, who was later convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.
The 9,861 BTC transfer is allegedly the first known movement of these Silk Road-associated funds since 2013, and it has raised questions about the US Government’s plans for these seized assets. It is uncertain whether the Vlada ZDA intends to sell the BTC, hold them as an investment, or use them for other purposes. As of now, Coinbase has not made any official statements on this transfer.
The news of James Zhong pleading guilty to wire fraud nine years after stealing over 51,000 BTC from the Silk Road platform has sent shockwaves across the cryptocurrency world. This case highlights the ongoing challenge of securing digital assets and the consequences of failing to do so.
Zhong, a former software engineer for Silk Road, admitted to stealing the BTC in 2013 by using a loophole in the site’s code. He then transferred the stolen funds to his own wallets and eventually laundered them through various cryptocurrency exchanges. At the time of the theft, the 51,000 BTC were worth around $38 million.
