The iconic Filipino comics character Francisco \u201cKenkoy\u201d Harabas of the series \u201cMga Kabalbalan ni Kenkoy\u201d by Tony Velasquez will soon have his own line of non-fungible tokens (NFT). This was announced by Ian Velasquez, comics writer and also the grandson of the elder Velasquez, who was known as the Father of Philippine comics.<\/p>\n

 \u201cWatch out for upcoming NFTs (non fungible tokens) based on Kenkoy characters, as well as vintage strips from the \u201950s.\u201d \u2013Ian Velasquez<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ian announced this during the \u201cVelasquez Komiks Eksibit: Selebrasyon ng Ika-90 Kaarawan ni Ponyang Halobaybay at Ika-75 Kaarawan ni DI-13\u201d which runs until June 30 at NCCA Gallery. It was first announced by the Kenkoy Facebook page last May 21.<\/p>\n

According to him, the exclusive NFT collection of Kenkoy is set to be released soon through the premier NFT marketplace ARTYST Space. Other details about the NFTs are still yet to be disclosed.<\/p>\n

Kenkoy first appeared on the pages of Liwayway Magazine in 1929. His character design consists of a slicked-back hairstyle and often looking dapper in well-tailored suits, button-down shirts and baggy pants with suspenders; a representation of how early 20th-century Filipinos embraced American culture.<\/p>\n

Accordingly, last May, multi-disciplinary artist Bjorn Calleja<\/a> was the lone Filipino artist whose work was exhibited during the pioneering interactive art exhibit entitled \u201cNFTs + The Ever-Evolving World of Art” at Art Basel Hong Kong. Recently, UBX, the fintech venture studio of UnionBank, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with art-tech enterprise Unit 256 Ventures Inc. to co-develop Artifract.io, a platform that democratizes fine arts ownership by fractionalizing them as NFTs.
