CHICAGO, IL. Jun. 24, 2019 – The body shop at Ford Motor Company’s Chicago Assembly Plant, where the Ford Explorer is manufactured.

An investigation into Ford Motor Co.’s past recalls of 710,000 Explorer SUVs due to claims of power loss was announced by U.S. auto safety regulators on Saturday.

The recall involved a rear axle mounting bolt that can fracture, causing the drive shaft to disconnect. This allows the SUVs can roll away even if it’s placed in “Park,” albeit without the parking brake on.

The flaw affects 2020-2022 Ford Explorers equipped with the 2.3-liter and 3.3-liter engines, 3.0-liter ST models, as well as 3.0-liter and 3.3-liter hybrids. In addition, 2020-2021 Explorer Police Hybrids and Explorer Police 3.3-liter vehicles are affected.

The problem has led to 235 warranty claims, but no crashes or injuries.

Ford’s solution

2020-2022 Ford Explorers are affected by the recall and its seemingly problematic fix.

Ford remedied the problem not by replacing the bolt, but by issuing a software update that applies the electronic parking brake if the drive shaft fails, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in a statement. The broken horizontal rear axle mounting bolt, “which is the basis of this safety issue and the cause of the impaired vehicle,” cannot be fixed.

However, two 2021 Ford Explorer owners claim that after the repair, their SUVs began acting unpredictably.

In one instance, an Explorer owner claims that the Explorer abruptly stopped while driving as fast as 40 mph, causing the SUV to roll down a hill and hit a utility pole as the powertrain seemed to be disconnected. “The vehicle would randomly slam to a complete stop while driving. It happened several times with three different drivers (myself, my wife, and my son), each happening at 30-35 mph or less,” according to the complaint.

In another instance, an Explorer owner said the vehicle said the vehicle lurched forward while the electronic brake was being disengaged.

This has led to NHTSA investigating whether the recall is adequate.

How reliable is it?

This is only the latest recall concern, one that seems to afflict the popular SUV. For 2023, the Ford Explorer was hit by another recall, in addition to the one mentioned above. According to Consumer Reports, it was issued in January and again in May for 2020-2023 Explorers, Lincoln Aviators, as well as 2020-2022 Lincoln Corsairs to update the image processing module software, as Explorers built with a 360-degree camera have a video output that could fail, preventing the rearview camera image from displaying.

Both hybrid and gas models are part of the recall being examined by NHTSA.

Overall, the consumer magazine rates the Explorer’s reliability as “much worse than average,” placing 13th out of 15 midsized three-row SUVs in the organization’s rankings.

Other outlets aren’t as tough.

مطابق با Repairpal.com, the Explorer’s reliability is “above average,” meriting 3.5 stars out of 5, and ranking 19th out of 26 for midsize SUVs. According to the site, it has average ownership, with annual repairs averaging $732. To put that in perspective, midsize SUVs average of $573 in repair costs, less that the $652 average for all vehicle models.

Meanwhile, J.D. Power rates the Explorer’s “quality and reliability”— aka level of defects, malfunctions, and design flaws experienced by vehicle owners – at 82 out of 100, which the organization considers “great.” That said, owners’ experience with purchasing and service at Ford dealers is 79 out of 100, or “average,” according to J.D. Power.

Ford sold 90,919 Explorers in the first five months of 2023, up 8.6% from the 83,131 units sold during the same period in 2022.
