Malaysia’s AirAsia Group has announced that it has converted its remaining orders for the Airbus A320neo and has instead opted to order the larger and more efficient Airbus A321neo. According to AirAsia, the airline group has signed “an amendment agreement” with Airbus to convert its remaining undelivered order of 13 Airbus A320neo aircraft for the Airbus A321neo.
Following the amendments, the AirAsia Group is now committed to purchasing a total of 362 Airbus A321neos, which will be distributed to airlines within the group based on demand. The AirAsia Group stated that it expects to receive all 362 A321neos by 2035.
In a company statement, the President of AirAsia, Bo Lingam said “Our airline network and fleet strategy have been thoroughly reviewed to ensure flying on the most popular and profitable routes as we prepare for travel resumption across our network.”

<p>The single-aisle Airbus A321neo aircraft can accommodate up to 236 passengers. According to AirAsia, this aircraft will “enable the airline to increase capacity while benefiting from the lowest operating costs in the single-aisle category.” The A321neo will ultimately go on to replace the carrier’s older A320s and will be equipped with Airbus’s Space-Flex cabin.</p>
<p>Commenting on the announcement the CEO of AirAsia Group, Tony Fernandes said that the company will <em>“continue to innovate and adapt.”</em> The Chief Executive added that the company is <em>“already seeing improvements in terms of customer base, as well as revenue and other key metrics.”</em></p>
<p>The AirAsia Group received its first A321neo back in November 2019. The group currently has a total of 211 aircraft in its fleet comprising of 169 Airbus A320s, 38 Airbus A320neos, and four Airbus A321neos. </p>
