Alaskan Relocation? Northern Pacific Is Recruiting Staff Now

Northern Pacific Airways is taking another leap towards the commencement of operations as it has begun a significant recruitment drive. The airline this week launched its online hiring portal, and is anticipating recruiting more than 50 employees before the year is out. With the exodus of citizens from densely populated city centers, Northern Pacific is banking on its unique combination of a rugged, outdoorsy lifestyle and an exciting international airline to attract the best talent for its team.

Move to Alaska?

Startup airline Northern Pacific Airways is inviting intrepid aviation workers to “Move to Alaska” with the launch of its new online hiring portal, www.flynp.com/careers. On the back of securing its first six Boeing 757-200s, the airline is ready to begin hiring, and has listed a plethora of interesting opportunities on its website.

Rob McKinney, CEO of Alaska’s newest international airline, commented on the recruitment drive, saying,

“We invite people across the country to move to Alaska, where you can not only work for an international airline, but also live and play in the great outdoors, enjoying all that the state has to offer.”

Opportunities range from positions such as Chief Engineer to administrative and customer service jobs. Naturally, recruitment is open for Captains, First Officers, and Flight Attendants as well. Most opportunities are based in Anchorage, but there are potions scattered around the state too, in Cold Bay, King Salmon, Valdez and more.

Northern Pacific Airways tells Simple Flying that it plans to recruit more than 50 employees by the end of the year. CEO McKinney noted that, “This is just the start.” He has previously indicated that the airline could seek as many as 450 employees in the short-term future, 300 of which would be based in Anchorage. McKinney concluded,

“Northern Pacific Airways is grateful for the opportunity to offer many new jobs to our community, as well as welcoming others to join us on our adventure in Alaska. Northern Pacific Airways intends to operate flights to both the lower 48 and to Asia. Taking inspiration from the likes of Icelandair, it will offer connecting flights with the option of an adventurous stopover in Alaska. Services will commence next year, using its 757s initially, but the airline is open to adding other fleet types as it expands in the future.

Ditching the cities

Research by US home mover specialist MyMove in association with allconnect, found that there was a significant uptick in people leaving the big cities in the early days of the pandemic. With almost 70% of workers suddenly finding themselves working from home, many began to re-evaluate their lifestyles and to prioritize a better work-life balance over city center living.

Some of the biggest US cities saw some of the largest losses of people in 2020. Combined, New York and Brooklyn lost more than 250,000 residents – seven times the number who left in 2019. Chicago lost 64,000, San Francisco 60,000, and Los Angeles 62,000, all significant increases over previous years. Moving out of the cities is not a new trend, but it was undoubtedly accelerated during COVID.

Altogether, more than seven million US citizens moved home on a permanent basis in 2020. Not everyone moved a long way away, with around half relocating to the suburbs. Nevertheless, 48% moved out of state, many to rural locations. With lower cost of living, a healthier lifestyle, and the prospect of working from home longer term on the table, rural areas like some of those in Alaska suddenly have much greater appeal.

Speaking to local press earlier this year, Rob McKinney noted just how much he is enjoying his time in the northerly state. He said,

“It’s been just a fantastic, exciting time. I’ve fallen in love with this state and the people here.”
