Biggest Sporting Events of 2023

Source Node: 1895766

As we kickstart 2023, we are all wondering what the biggest sports of this planet have in store for us, from the NBA, to Rugby, and then back to the UFC and boxing, and the list goes on.

The UEFA Champions League (UCL)  finals are back in Istanbul, Turkey for the first time since 2005. Liverpool’s boss Jurgen Klopp promised the fans a return to the finals after missing out on the trophy to Real Madrid. This return would coincidentally mean a return to the city where they won their fifth UCL trophy. Can they do it?

Here  we have compiled a list of the biggest sporting events of 2023 for you.

Australian Open (16 January – 29 January)

The return of the Serbian is upon us as the Australian Open will start on the 16th of January, and Novak Djokovic will partake in it. This comes after a controversial ban last year due to the Covid related dilemma.

Novak Djokovic looks to capture his 22nd grand slam title to equal his Spanish rival Rafael Nadal. His chase for this grand slam won’t go unanswered as Rafael Nadal will be there to defend his all time leaderboard pole position.

This grand slam will take place from the 16th to the 29th of January.

NFL Super Bowl LVII (12 February)

The 57th Super Bowl game will be an early spotting  event of 2023, taking place on the 12th of February. With the season still ongoing, and some teams still fighting for a playoff berth, there is no telling which 2 teams will be playing at this enormous stage.

The Super Bowl will kick off at the State Farm stadium in Arizona, and this will only be the third time the Super Bowl takes place there after debuting in 2008. In both years that it was hosted in this stadium, the New York Giants made the finals.

With Rihanna meant to headline the halftime performance, the only question left is, can she equate the performances put on last year by the several rap legends. Either way, we should be in for a treat.

Formula 1 World Championship (5 March – 26 November)

On the 5th of March, the best drivers fasten their seatbelts for another historic season. It has become clear that Max Verstappen is chasing greatness, and not just victories, it is almost impossible to tell what his roof is. An elite driver with a mentality built to win against all odds, can he get his third championship this year?

We can all assume that Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. have both learnt from this season, and that the Ferrari team has learnt from its shortcomings and will come back understanding that there is no room for mistakes when you are up against a team like Red Bull. The question is will their car be as fast in 2023, or will we see a return of the black and silver dominance?

We can’t ever forget the greatness, the level at which most drivers will be judged upon. In many’s eyes, the greatest driver there ever was, Lewis Hamilton. Can he get his 8th, can he sit alone at the top? Can he go above the great Michael Schumacher, he was one lap away from doing so in 2021 in Abu Dhabi, but it has all been forgotten now. Can Mercedes make him a car that can compete with Red Bull, or is it simply that Father Time has caught up with Lewis?

NBA PLAYOFFS (15 April – May)

On the 15th of April, the NBA playoffs return. With the finals taking place in June, the Eastern Conference is not a place you want to be right now as the Celtics are growing in confidence, and Jayson Tatum is becoming the player many thought he would be.

The kryptonite seems to be the Bucks, but that can only be, if Giannis can get Khris Middleton back. Other teams to watch out for are the 76ers and the Nets. The stars of these teams have come out to play, it should be an interesting ending to this season.

The Dallas Mavericks are looking unstoppable with Luka Doncic playing like an MVP. The question is does he have the tools around him to go all the way? And if he gets a team as tough as the Clippers, if he comes across Paul George and Kawhi Leonard again, can the Mavs find a way? As they lost to them in the playoffs for 2 consecutive seasons.

UEFA Champions League Final (10 June)

The home of champions will be decided in Istanbul. It has been a long time coming for Manchester City, Liverpool look like they have missed out on the league already, besides domestic cups, this could be their only chance of silverware.

Real Madrid are the juggernauts of the tournament, and they will be looking to keep it that way, Bayern Munich come back and play against PSG, in a Round of 16 game that sees a rematch of the 2020 UCL final.

The Ballon d’Or winner of this year could come down to the winner of this tournament. Haaland has been nothing short of amazing. Kyllian Mbappe at only 23 years of age took France to their second consecutive World Cup final. Lionel Messi won the World Cup, and was the best player in the tournament too.

World Athletics Championships (19 August-27 August)

In August we head to Budapest, Hungary for the championships. Many believe the 100m track runners are changing space and that 9:58 seconds is almost impossible, but Fred Kerley will not be giving up on it. He wants to see himself on the level of the likes of LeBron James and Lionel Messi eventually, many believe beating that record is how he does it.

Elaine Thompson has struggled to find her form since her gold medal in the Olympics in 2021. Whereas her country mate Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has been ageing like fine wine, nothing seems to be able to stop her, not even Elaine Thompson.

This will be a great time to get into athletics as the Olympics will be back just next year. Rivalries will be created, and records are after all, only made to be broken, and so they will be.

Rugby World Cup (8 September-28 October)

France plays host to the best rugby nations once again since 2007. The last time the French hosted, South Africa (Springboks) left as the champions. This time around they come in as the holders.

South Africa should love their chances as they were placed in a relatively winnable pool with Ireland, Scotland, Tonga and Romania. The French were placed in the same pool as New Zealand (All Blacks) and these two nations will play it out in an appetising opener of the World Cup.

Cricket World Cup (October-November)

In October India looks to host 10 nations in this prestigious tournament. This will be the first time India hosts since 2011 when they beat Sri Lanka in the finals. The odds play in their favour too as they are amongst the favourites to win the competition.

England’s sight is on holding onto what they won in 2019. England won its first cricket World Cup trophy against New Zealand in a game for the ages. They have a chance now to win it twice in succession.

UFC International Fight Week (TBC)

The annual international fight week is yet to be confirmed, but guarantees a big superstar as a main event. Last year saw UFC former Middleweight Champion, Israel Adesanya take on Jared Cannonier. This fight week in the past has given us Conor McGregor vs Chad Mendes, Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonnen 2, and the famous Jorge Masvidal knee to Ben Askren’s temple.

This is a must see TV. It could mark the trilogy between Kamaru Usman and Leon Edwards, or it could be Adesanya and Pereira 2. If it is not either of these 2 big fights, we could finally get the clash of clashes between Jon Jones, the greatest of all time, versus Francis Ngannou, the hardest hitting fighter in UFC history.

Some can hope and possibly see the return of the Mac as Dana believes in Conor’s return he could go up against Iron Mike Chandler who is widely seen as the most exciting fighter in the organisation at the moment. Whichever way it goes, the headline is bound to be a big one.

Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk (TBC)

Four years ago, the unification bout had Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder standing on either side of the corner. The fight never quite came to fruition for various reasons. Four years later, Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk have replaced their former opponents and are now staring at the same unification bout in the eyes.

Tyson Fury is 6 ‘9 but moves like a welterweight, the only man to ever take Deontay Wilder’s best and still find a path to victory. He is a heavyweight dream that could have existed in any generation and possibly would have become a champion in all of them.

Oleksandr Usyk is nothing less of an anomaly. He did not just win against the great  Anthony Joshua, he also proved that he was better. In their second bout we saw what many deemed to be the best version of Joshua, but Usyk was just too good for the former 2-time World Heavyweight Champion. Now he has a chance to unify the belts if he can beat the Gypsy King, Tyson Fury.

Gervonta Davis vs Ryan Garcia (TBC)

Speed and precision, meets power and accuracy. A boxing fanatic’s delight. With no date on the fight as yet, this fight seems to have been guaranteed by the fighters for 2023. Garcia has a staggering 23-0 record to match Davis’ 27-0.

Ryan Garcia is one of the fastest fighters in the history of boxing. He is known for his speed and his left hook that he throws from his orthodox stance.

Gervonta Davis is one of the hardest hitting 135 pounders in the world. He fights from the southpaw stance, and uses his jab for both offensive and defensive reasons. On the defensive side, he uses the jab to maintain distance from his opponents who usually have a longer reach or are taller in height.

No matter which way this goes, it promises to be a chess match between two elite undefeated boxers.
