“Through our conversations with users across 22 countries, we’ve deepened our understanding of the essential role steerability plays in enabling our models to effectively reflect the diverse contexts and unique needs of each person,” the ChatGPT developer said.

Custom Instructions: Revolutionizing ChatGPT Interactions

In a recent blog post, OpenAI stressed that they have been receiving reports about users being frustrated by the friction of starting each ChatGPT conversation every time. 

In our past articles about using ChatGPT and other chatbots, it has been emphasized that to be able to have these chatbots produce the output or answer that we want, we really have to give the whole context of the prompt, provide the reason behind the question, or even state some examples.

Overcoming ChatGPT’s Memory Limitations

Because technically, ChatGPT can only remember the context of the current conversation; it cannot remember the context of the past, and it cannot use the past context for future conversations. 

“Right now, if you open up ChatGPT, it doesn’t know much about you. If you start a new thread, it forgets everything you’ve talked about in the past. But there are things that might apply across all conversations,” Joanne Jang, who works on model behaviors and products at OpenAI, admitted. 

Now, with this new feature, users can share custom information with ChatGPT so the chatbot will know how to respond. And once users have set their preferences, ChatGPT will keep them in mind for all future conversations.

Basically, ChatGPT will consider the user’s instructions for every conversation going forward, so the user will not have to repeat them every time.

How to Enable and Use the Custom Instructions Feature

According to OpenAI, the Custom Instructions feature is only available in beta to users with the Plus plan, but it also assured users that the feature will expand to all users in the coming weeks.

To use this feature, just enable it in the settings section and enter the instructions needed. There are two questions: 

• What would you like ChatGPT to know about you to provide better responses?
• How would you like ChatGPT to respond?

However, if users may want to change the instructions provided, they can either edit or delete it at any time and give an updated instruction.

“Exactly how users should create their custom instructions and how ChatGPT should interpret them is still hard to say. You should be telling ChatGPT about you and it should be learning about you simultaneously, and all that information should be easy to access and tweak to your liking,” Jang concluded.
