CD Projekt SA recently employed AI technology in their latest expansion, Phantom Liberty for Cyberpunk 2077. The objective was to reproduce the voice of the late Miłogost Reczek, a celebrated Polish voice actor who passed away in 2021. Reczek’s portrayal of the character Viktor Vektor was exceptional, making him irreplaceable in the eyes of the developers.

Before proceeding with this innovative approach, CD Projekt SA sought and received permission from Reczek’s family. Initially, the company contemplated replacing Reczek in the expansion and re-recording his lines in the original game. However, they felt this wouldn’t do justice to his outstanding performance. Instead, they hired another voice actor to record new lines for Viktor Vektor and then utilized a voice-cloning software, Respeecher, to modify the dialogue to sound like Reczek. This method not only preserved Reczek’s stellar performance but also served as a tribute to his remarkable talent.

The utilization of generative AI, capable of producing text, images, and voice, has sparked both enthusiasm and concern across the entertainment sector. Recently, video game voice actors have even considered strikes over concerns about AI recreating their work without proper authorization. Union leader Ray Rodriguez emphasized the potential threat AI poses to professionals whose livelihood depends on their voice and other skills.
