Getting in on the action

With the launch of online sportsbooks in North Carolina on the horizon, DraftKings and BetMGM have secured market access. The current plan is for the sector to go live in time for the highly popular March Madness college basketball tournament. The initial deadline of being up and running by the Super Bowl in February was too soon for the state’s regulator.

BetMGM has partnered with the Charlotte Motor Speedway, while DraftKings signed an agreement with NASCAR. This comes after Bet365 struck a deal with the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets and ESPN Bet with the Wells Fargo Championship PGA Tour event. Professional sports teams, certain venues, and governing bodies can partner with sportsbook operators in North Carolina.

BetMGM’s deal

Speaking about the new relationship with the Charlotte Motor Speedway, BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt emphasized the anticipation of launching in a state that has “more than 10 million people and one of the most vibrant sports environments in the country.”

The Charlotte Motor Speedway was built in 1959 and has hosted many notable races over the years, including the Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR event every Memorial Day weekend.

The motorsports venue’s General Manager and Executive Vice President Greg Walter also welcomed the news and he believes that it will help attract major sporting events in the future to the state.

DraftKings gains access to yet another state

In addition to gaining market access through its deal with NASCAR, DraftKings will also now be its exclusive daily fantasy sports partner in North America. It will receive enhanced sponsorship benefits as an Authorized Gaming Operator of the racing organization.

DraftKings currently has sportsbooks in 25 states. It is planning to launch in Vermont on January 11, with North Carolina next on the list.

DraftKings North America President Matt Kalish noted the close relationship that the organizations have had over the years and he looks forward to the next chapter. NASCAR Managing Director of Sports Betting Joe Solosky echoed this sentiment, remarking about DraftKings’ “proven track record of enhancing the fan experience across sports.”
