Dragon’s Dogma 2’s Sphinx Poses Compelling Gameplay Riddles on PS5

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is looking like a fairly radical departure from standard single-player RPG fare. One such example is a nightmarish quest giver, Capcom’s depiction of the classical Sphinx, which will require the player to solve riddles with their actions rather than words.

As part of IGN’s ongoing First coverage of the game, director Hideaki Itsuno and lead game designer Kento Kinoshita discuss what makes the Medusa tick. It sounds like players will need to delve into dungeons, looking for chests containing an item that will solve a particular riddle amongst all the other chests normally found there. Given one shot, if you give the Sphix the wrong reward, you’ll be locked out of receiving that specific riddle’s reward. The Riddle of Eyes was given as an example: “Our eyes are our allies, yet oft do they betray, for eyes tell lies, so I advise, and thence do lead astray.”

Itsuno says there are plenty of mysteries to be uncovered for adventurers dedicated enough to uncover them, teasing: “We wanted to make the very question of whether it could be defeated or even fought into a mystery, and we’d like that to be a part of the fun players have dealing with the Sphinx and its riddles. Players will need to find the Sphinx in the first place if they can. The journey to finding it might actually be the biggest mystery of all.”
