FutureMakers Newsletter 14 July 2023

Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou Māori!
Matariki is the Māori name for the Pleiades star cluster, and its rising marks the start of the Māori new year. It is an important time for reflection, remembrance, and celebration of new beginnings. – thoughts closely aligned with the Learn-Look-Live framework underpinning the work of FutureMakers.
Thus, our new Matariki holiday provides a perfect opportunity for reflection and future focused thinking. In this newsletter I’ve included a handful of readings and links relating to the innovation that is happening in schools and classrooms through the use of digital technologies. Matariki provides a timely opportunity to apply our thinking that includes learning from the past, looking to the future and living in the present to ensure that what we are doing is evidence-based and successful in helping our tamariki learn, grow and thrive into the future.

In this newsletter…

Innovating Pedagogy

This report from the Open University explores new forms of teaching, learning, and assessment for an interactive world, to guide teachers and policy makers in productive innovation. Chapters in this report address things like using AI tools such as ChatGPT to support teaching and learning; educational opportunities through fully immersive 3D environments; pedagogies enabling students to see themselves in the curriculum, and students as change agents in society to mention a few. Lots in here to interest future-focused educators!

The Power of Concern

As educators we all have concerns about the issues facing teachers, schools, students and parents in our every changing world. The Power of Concern draws a connection between the concerns expressed by educators and the motivation this provides to develop innovative approaches to teaching and learning. We mustn’t let our concerns lead us into the death spiral of conspiracy theory and negativity. Instead we must let it motivate and lead us to understand what the real issues are and to explore what the solutions might be.

More ambition required

Thinking about innovative teaching and learning in the digital space, I recommend you take some time to watch the recording of the OECD webinar from this week, Unleashing the potential of digital technologies for education which addresses some of the key points in their recent strategy document. The first speaker, Antoaneta Angelova-Krasteva, spoke of her work on the EU’s Digital Education Action Plan 2021-27, and urged that our strategies and action plans need to be more ambitious if we’re to address the demands of our rapidly changing environment. Andraes Schleicher’s slide show is worth viewing – particularly slide #4 which highlight’s the response of NZ principals to questions about the suitability of digital devices and digital platforms being used.
Well worth viewing the entire recording as there is a lot to consider in terms of the role of digital technologies in transforming teaching and learning.
