Broken Roads is coming in November

Broken Roads is being sold as a ‘Classic RPG for the modern age’. It just so happens to look absolutely outstanding too. But best of all? Broken Roads has now been confirmed for a November 2023 release.

Broken Roads comes about via a collaboration between the indie studio at Drop Bear Bytes, and those at Versus Evil. An isometric RPG, you’ll be finding Broken Roads releasing on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC in November. November 14th, in fact.

Confirmed today with a release date trailer, Broken Roads certainly looks to have something about it.

Narrative driven RPG

It’s a narrative-driven RPG that throws us into an Australian post-apocalyptic setting. From there, choices need to be made, turn-based combat must be taken in and a host of exploration should be enjoyed.

Broken Roads promises to blend traditional and all-new role-playing elements  as one, building onto a classless system that in itself offers near-unlimited character development options. These will be built around four philosophies: Humanist, Utilitarian, Machiavellian, and Nihilist.

Further is an original morality system. It’s here where the Moral Compass comes into play, which sees dialogue options and questing decisions influence, and be influenced by, a character’s philosophical leaning. That and the tough decisions they make along the way.

Perhaps the most exciting thing is the location. Broken Roads has been put together on the back of the team visiting towns and landmarks in West Australia. From there, gathering photos, videos and audio recordings for it to be as true as possible. That feeling should be amplified by the atmospheric soundtrack. This has been composed by Tim Sunderland, utilising instruments constructed from everyday objects. As you’d expect, that brings a wholly unique and distinctive tone to the game.

The devs are excited for release

“With Broken Roads we wanted to make a deep, moving RPG full of a massive web of choices that allow for unprecedented choice in role-playing,” said Craig Ritchie, Game Director at Drop Bear Bytes. “We also wanted to create a fully immersive world based around our native Australia, so a ton of work went into creating an authentic vision of this post-apocalyptic wasteland. Broken Roads may be set in the dusty desert badlands, but we wanted to ensure that it’s also full of compassion, empathy and humanity.”

“RPGs are deeply embedded into the Versus Evil DNA and Broken Roads is among the best we’ve seen,” said Steve Escalante, General Manager of Versus Evil. “We are pumped to get ready to launch Broken Roads to the masses and are confident it will strike a chord with fans of Disco Elysium and Pillars of Eternity. Enjoy!”
