Changpeng Zhao, former CEO of cryptocurrency exchange Binance, received a four-month federal prison sentence for anti-money laundering violations.

The sentencing took place in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. Zhao had earlier pleaded guilty and agreed to a personal $50 million fine, while Binance agreed to pay $4.3 billion in one of history’s largest corporate settlements.

During his sentencing, Zhao expressed remorse and highlighted Binance’s implementation of a Know Your Customer and anti-money laundering program, along with its cooperation with the government, Coindesk reported.

Prosecutors had sought a longer term, arguing that Zhao’s exchange targeted U.S. users and intentionally violated U.S. laws as a business strategy.

Conversely, Zhao’s legal troubles originated from his failure to enforce strict anti-money laundering measures during his tenure as CEO of Binance. The judge in Zhao’s case considered approximately 161 letters vouching for his character.

Patrick Hillmann, a former colleague at Binance, defended the sentence as just and reflective of Zhao’s efforts to rectify past mistakes. Legal experts also observed that judges typically adhere closely to sentencing guidelines unless compelling reasons warrant deviation.
