In the news release, Binance said it appointed former IRS special agent Tigran Gambaryan as a VP of global intelligence and investigations while Matthew Price who is another special agent will become the company’s senior director of investigations. Gambaryan started his IRS career at the Oakland expert but he is a blockchain expert that is well known in the crypto law enforcement circles. His latest accomplishment was uncovering the corrupt DEA agent that stole millions in BTC from Ross Ulbricht who ran the notorious Silk Road marketplace. He was also instrumental in major cases like the 2014 Mt.Gox case which drowned the entire crypto industry at that time and then brought down BTC-e, the Russian exchange which served as a variety of criminal enterprises.

Price is also knowledgeable in crypto as he led the IRS’ investigation into Helix, a BTC tumbled whose CEO pled guilty to charges that were related to money laundering. The hiring of the two agents from the IRS runs a very sophisticated law enforcement operation and now its former employee will help Binance fight illicit activities on the platform to which critics say the exchange turned a blind eye recently.

The appointments of Price and Gambaryan came after Binance announced the hiring of the dark web specialist from Europol and a compliance director from etoro. In the meantime, Binance declared that all of its customers have to comply with the KYC rules and even appointed a new president with a background in the traditional corporate world. All of this only send a signal that Binance and its CEO Changpeng Zhao are making serious efforts to assure regulators that the exchange turned the corner and decided to take compliance more seriously.

The new hires, including the former IRS agent, will help Binance ensure that it complies with teh rules of various jurisdictions but won’t solve the problem of the previous transgressions that exist.
