A regional clash pit two powerhouses against one another in an intense best-of-five series that shook Chengdu.

Caps and co. were at a level reminiscent of their glory days in 2019. Fnatic already fell to Gen.G on day two, so the G2 roster was carrying their entire region’s hopes for a straight track to MSI 2024 finals.

It all came to a head in their series against T1, the truest crucible for their newly-formed playstyle. But was their current state strong enough to overpower the best international team Korea has ever produced?

Game 1

G2 boasted a more robust team comp when contrasted with T1’s unorthodox picks. That said, the LCK exist at a level beyond the strongest regions in the sport.

Great zoning from Caps led to his team getting the jump on the Unkillable Demon King, claiming first blood. The LEC’s best midlaner won another 1v1 against T1’s star player before BB and Yike found more success up top, putting G2 4-0 eight minutes in.

Soonafter, four T1 players collapsed on G2’s most important player, and the shutdown was followed by two more when Faker and Zeus caught their opponents in front-to-back skirmishes. G2 couldn’t afford another overstep here.

The LEC #1 seed captured one more turret with the Void Grub buff before T1 started a Herald siege that gave them a big gold injection. Seeing their momentum, BrokenBlade tried to get a pick under mid tower, but was eventually pushed back with his team, costing G2 3 kills. Another desperate fight ended in a deficit, and T1 took the lead.

After a confident Baron take, T1 dove on Caps every chance they got. It was hard to disengage when your opponent had so much crowd control. But even with a confident start — and a Baron of their own — G2 found themselves defenseless against T1’s impeccable macroplay. T1 turn things around for a game-one win.

Game 2

G2 wanted to crack open T1’s frontline to prevent Faker’s Talia from scaling too hard in the late game. But Keria’s Neeko was going to be extremely difficult to deal with.

G2 Esports was scattered in the early game, with Mikyx taking the brunt of T1’s assault. The LEC reps were 1k gold behind, and T1 continued to punish botlane to keep G2’s bot duo suppressed.

The Kings of Europe toiled for two insane kills that put them 2k gold over T1, which they put to good use. BrokenBlade’s Zac was three items in, making him a formidable frontline threat. So he worked alone to force T1 into awkward spots and help his team flawlessly secure an Infernal Drake Soul Point.

This enabled G2 to win two more skirmishes, granting them an immense 2:1 kill lead that completely flipped the script. Despite a greedy nexus push, G2 Esports dominantly equalized the series 1-1.

Game 3

Playing Camille into an engage-heavy team with a Poppy wasn’t the best course of action, but the LCK #2 seed is known for winning handicapped match-ups.

Game 3 was a white-knuckled slugfest that saw summoner spells spent on both sides just four minutes in. It was clear that G2 was being hyperaggressive for a sizeable early-game lead. But T1 played smart while still matching the score.

What followed was a series of scrappy fights that all went G2’s way. Because of Steadfast Presence, Mikyx and his allies got to weave in and out of bad spots, taking the kills they needed. All of this culminated in a game-defining lead that spelt the winner for game three. G2 Esports take another groundbreaking win.

Game 4

G2’s comp looked slightly shaky against T1’s, which focused more on map control than teamfight power.

The first ten minutes of the match was tense as neither team was willing to give first blood gold. T1  slowly secured major jungle camps for a 2k gold lead. Meanwhile, G2 was more interested in killing Guma before he became too much of a threat.

The first two kills buried G2 further down in gold deficits, but they responded quickly; both teams met in a mid skirmish that gave G2 two kills, and the gold difference seemed to close.

However, T1 forced the EU team into a bad fight in the top jungle, nearly wiping G2. Yike was the only one who survived Faker’s Emperor’s Divide. But one Rek’Sai wasn’t going to be enough to turn a 10-4 score around. T1 assert their dominance for Game Four of a Silver Scrapes series.

Game 5

T1’s gambit on a non-utility comp gave them an extremely powerful single-target damage, but G2’s double-HoB demanded a very early brawl.

G2’s aggression from game three was back. After a nailbiter 5v5 in the first minute, G2 found first blood at bot. Even as G2’s pace slowed, they still found a cheeky level advantage over the Kalista-Varus.

While Mikyx and HansSama were dictating the botlane, T1’s mid-jungle duo focused on objectives to compensate. T1 was behind, but Faker was also on Ahri, which meant that the LCK reps got kills anyway.

G2 was funnelling so much gold into HansSama, making him their win condition. But T1 found an angle during a midlane skirmish that killed G2’s momentum. Caps and co. were desperate to recapture the lead, but Faker already had Lichbane, and couldn’t be stopped.

G2′ HansSama didn’t have armor penetration, and T1 lacked hard CC, putting the game on a razor’s edge. But a crucial charm from Ahri disabled G2’s Poppy at the last minute, which opened the way for the rest of them to dive into G2’s nexus. T1 takes the series in an extremely close bo5.
