Gen.G Esports Create History By Winning Four Consecutive LCK Titles

Gen.G Esports have won its fourth consecutive LCK title and became the first team in history to do so.

The LCK stranglehold is well and truly in the hands of Gen.G Esports after they defeated T1 in the spring split grand finals. Gen.G has arguably been the LCK’s most consistent team since the start of last season and they proved it earlier today once again as this was the fourth time in a row that they have bested T1 in a regional grand final.

And that win will mean much more with the knowledge that Gen.G is now the only LCK team in history to ever achieve such a feat. They are also in great company as they join an exclusive list that consists of Team Liquid and G2 Esports, two other orgs that have won four regional titles in a row.

Gen.G’s victory also meant that they now book a spot in the Bracket Stage of the Mid-Season Invitational alongside Liquid, the only two teams that have been confirmed. The other teams in contention so far are the LPL’s Bilibili Gaming and Top Esports alongside the LEC’s G2 Esports and Fnatic. The grand finals for the LPL will take place next Saturday while the LEC grand finals starts later today.

The road Gen.G took to get its fourth consecutive LCK title has been nothing if not dominant. In the 18 games played during the group stage, Gen.G lost just one match-up and that was against KT Rolster and was able to win the rest with relative ease, dropping only five maps while winning 34. However, things did get intense for them during the playoffs as both Dplus KIA and T1 were able to truly put Gen.G to the test by going to all five games.

Gen.G were also able to put a dent into T1’s fairytale run coming from the lower bracket after they lost to Hanwha Life Esports in the upper bracket semifinals. T1 has been plagued by DDoS attacks over the last few months that have since meant the team has not been able to train and scrim ahead of the playoffs. But despite all that, the defending Worlds champions were still able to qualify to MSI, albeit in the harder stage.

Even after winning the first map, T1 was able to come back with two straight wins to put themselves on map point with one more needed to break the Gen.G spell. But alas, that was not the case as the defending champions were able to rally together and take back two rounds in a row to complete the dream. And the MVP of the grand finals was awarded to none other than Gen.G’s Kim “Kiin” Gi-in, who was part of a three-man recruit during the off-season.
