WHEN it comes to engaging an audience, Jake McIntyre is no stranger to the spotlight.

For months, Mr McIntyre has been preparing to take on the best auctioneers in Australia and New Zealand.

The Ray White agent has been working with a former Auctioneer of the Year winner to hone his skills ahead of the Australasian Auctioneering Championships, which will be held in Hobart as part of the REIA’s centenary celebrations.

He said his journey into auctioneering was sparked by a background in theatre and busking, where he loved being on stage.

“I have been finetuning my skills and getting the technicalities down pat with Harry Li, for example adding the numbers accurately and quickly, and avoiding trapdoors,” he said.

Mr McIntyre will be pitted against industry leaders who call up to 1000 auctions per year.

“It’s a bit like playing backyard cricket, then going straight to a Test Match!” Mr McIntyre said.

Real Estate Institute of Tasmania chief executive Michelle Tynan said competitors will be judged on dozens of criteria including appearance, their call, property description and engagement with the audience.

“It’s a great competition that has been running since the early ‘90s,” she said.

“Nine winners have been from NZ and 14 from the mainland. None from Tassie, yet.”

Auctions are a great way to sell, Jakes says.

Mr McIntyre believes there is scope for more auctions in Tasmania, a state not known as an auction market.

“To me, an auction creates competition. It is a transparent way to buy, where every purchaser can see exactly where their competition sits,” he said.

The ANZ Real Estate Institute of Australia 100 will be held May 14-16 in Hobart combining the auctioneering championships, the REIA National Awards for Excellence and the REIA’s Centennial Congress.

Twenty Tasmanians have been named finalists in the awards showcase.

The public is invited to attend the auctioneering event at the Crowne Plaza. Visit reia.com.au for details.
