According to the dictionary, the word “gib” is a delightful piece of gamer slang short for “giblets” and used when you’ve blown someone into a bloody pile of meat and organs. And according to John Romero, the legendary developer behind Doom, a lot of you have also been incorrectly pronouncing it, as a lot of people tend to use a hard “G” when saying the word.

As someone who helped lead the charge in creating video games where enemies would regularly explode into a chunky soup of blood and guts, Romero was asked for his expertise on how the world should be pronounced.

And there you go. If you’ve been using it in conversation, just know that you’ve been referencing Mark Harmon’s character of Leroy Jethro Gibbs from NCIS, not the art of destructively deconstructing bodies. Although, since this is the internet, some people will disagree with the experts on anything.

While Romero is working on a new first-person game, he also took the time to write and publish a book recently. In case you missed it, Doom Guy: Life In First Person is a great autobiographical covering Romero’s childhood, his early years coding games on Apple II computers, and his career in the industry working on games like Doom and Quake.

You can grab a hardcover edition for $25 on Amazon or a Kindle version for $14 for a fascinating look behind the scenes at how some of the most influential games of all time.

Meanwhile, the next generation of gibs could be upon us soon, as it’s rumored that a new Doom game will be revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase in June.
