The story

Hexagon, the connected and autonomous systems specialist headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, has added spatial mapping and visual positioning solutions to its toolset with the acquisition of Immersal.

Immersal, based in Helsinki, Finland, enables augmented reality developers to merge and anchor digital content to real-world objects by enabling a user’s mobile device to locate and orient itself in the surrounding physical world using machine-readable maps.

The maps, which are used for visual positioning, are constructed from image data supported by various mapping devices (including mobile phones) and hosted in the Immersal Cloud Service.

Check out an overview of the Immersal SDK (software development kit) in the video below

Hexagon, a 21,000-strong company across 50 countries, sees the Immersal SDK as a natural step forward for the autonomous connected ecosystems it develops for a range of industries and sectors, from surveying, construction, public safety and manufacturing to maintenance, training and navigation.

Spatial mapping and visual positioning solutions are core components of effective augmented reality apps and experiences, as they enhance a user’s visual perception with the display of digital content in the physical world.

They can, for example, be deployed in augmented reality advertising and marketing to further immerse consumers in a campaign, or, as is the plan at Hexagon, better connect remote experts with colleagues in the field, whether a construction site or a factory floor.

As Hexagon puts it, a more immersive experience can boost task efficiency, improve safety protocols, optimise workflows and increase collaboration.
