American Honda announced it was recalling nearly 1.2 million vehicles to resolve a problem that could cause each vehicle’s rearview camera to fail.

Honda is recalling 1.2 million Odyssey minivans and Pilot utility vehicles due to a problem with the rearview cameras.

The action covers some 2018-2023 Odyssey, 2019-2022 Pilot, and 2019-2023 Passport vehicles, according to the automaker. The company estimates as many of 50% of the affected vehicles could see problems. The problem stems from a faulty communication coaxial cable connector.

“The Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST) communication coaxial cable was improperly designed and manufactured, resulting in deformed terminals and potentially causing poor, or lost, connections intermittently between the audio display unit and the vehicle cable connector,” the company said in a NHTSA filing.

If communication is lost for 20 seconds, the rearview camera will fail while the vehicle is in reverse, increasing the danger the vehicle could crash.

In 2021, Honda extended the warranty to vehicles affected by the issue in 2021. The automaker said in an earlier filing with NHTSA it received 273,870 warranty claims related to the issue between May 2017 and June this year. There are no reports of injuries or deaths related to the recall issue.

To resolve the issue, dealers will install an improved cable harness between the existing display audio and vehicle terminal connections and a straightening cover over the vehicle cable connector to properly connect the audio display unit.

Dealer notification is scheduled to begin and end on or about June 16. Owner notification is scheduled to begin on or about July 24 and end on or about Aug. 2, according to the federal agency. Owners who have paid to have these repairs completed at their own expense will be eligible for reimbursement, in accord with the recall reimbursement plan on file with NHTSA.

Owners can determine if their specific vehicles are included in the recall by visiting www.recalls.honda.com or by calling (888) 234-2138.
