How many party members can you have in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Baldur’s Gate 3 lets you assemble a big team of varied characters around your campsite. Plus, there are even more party members to recruit throughout the game, with some being locked away behind certain choices. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to take every companion out with you for the adventure. So let’s talk about how many party members Baldur’s Gate 3 allows at once.

Baldur’s Gate 3: How many party members can you have

Once you’re a good few hours into the game, you’ll likely already have Lae’zel, Gale, Shadowheart, and Astarion all at your camp. But you will need to make a hard decision once you decide to leave again. Baldur’s Gate 3 only allows you to make a maximum party of four. So you’ll have to force at least some characters to sit on the bench.

This is such a hard decision to make because each character has unique comments for certain situations. And while you can just simply swap them out once you go back to camp, it’s annoying to feel like you’re missing out on something. Unfortunately, this is just a thing you’ll have to settle with. The good news is that benched party members still gain experience equal to the outgoing party. So, when you want to tag them back in, you don’t need to worry about them being under-leveled.

On the flip side, Baldur’s Gate 3 doesn’t force you to fill out your party member slots. In fact, if you so desire, you can head out into the world alone and opt for a lone wolf playthrough. Or maybe you’ll want to tag along with just your favorite vampire pal Astarion. The game will obviously be much harder if you do this, but it could be a fun challenge for those that know Baldur’s Gate 3 extremely well at this point. There are also mods that can extend the party member limit to exceed four. But this comes with the risk of harming the game’s balance. That’s an avenue you can go down if you simply can’t choose who to take though.
