For the “Master Kohga of the Yiga Clan” side adventure in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you will have to run into the bumbling Yiga Clan leader four times in different abandoned mines across the Depths. After you defeat Kohga for the first time at the Great Abandoned Central Mine, Kohga heads to the Abandoned Gerudo Mine, located right under Gerudo Town, in a futile attempt to gain the Autobuild power for himself. Despite the fact that he can already materialize vehicles out of thin air in his boss fights, he really wants Autobuild so he can exact his revenge on Link and end the world somehow. Thus begins the second boss encounter with Kohga, which serves as the subject for this very guide.

Tips for defeating Master Kohga

This Kohga fight plays out quite differently from the first, as he ditches the armored vehicle from before in favor of a tricked-out wing glider. For the whole encounter, Kohga will slowly circle around you from a distance before diving in for an attack. At first, he will activate the flame emitters beneath his glider to try to roast you as he passes above you.

During this phase, simply attaching an eyeball monster part to an arrow so that it homes in on Kohga when fired is an incredibly easy method for knocking him off the glider and leaving him open to melee hits. But if you don’t have eyeball parts or prefer not to use them, firing the arrow when Kohga dives toward you serves as the best course of action.

After whittling some of his health away, Kohga will forgo the flame emitters and instead try and blast you with his cannons. When you’re at ground level, his shots are surprisingly accurate, but thankfully, you can send the cannon shots away from you using Recall. Although the shots won’t come back toward Kohga directly, the strategy at least makes it much easier to avoid taking damage than if you ran away from the blast.

Once he gets to less than half of his health, Kohga will put shields around him to nullify arrows fired from the ground. He is still exposed at the top, however, so you will want to fire at him from up high. Fortunately, the arena has rockets, springs, and fans conveniently located around the perimeter that can give you some extra lift. And of course, you can bring out your own Zonai devices from your inventory to use instead if you want.

What comes next

With Master Kohga defeated once more, he gives up his search for the Autobuild ability. However, he remains as confident as ever, teasing the revival of an “ultimate weapon” powered through crystalized charges. But considering all of the challenges Link has to endure in Tears of the Kingdom and elsewhere, he shouldn’t have any trouble with whatever trick Master Kohga has up his sleeve.
