Horizon Worlds

Facebook recently hit the VR industry like a meteor with their announcement that they were changing their name to meta and going to be investing $10 billion into VR and their new metaverse platform, Horizon Worlds.

With this announcement was another announcement that they had created a $10 million dollar creator fund for people who were interested in becoming creators with the Horizon creator tools and making worlds for other Horizon users to visit.

But how can you dip into this pool? Information can be a bit hard to come by, but the steps are relatively simple overall. There are a few different methods.

1. Join community competitions. If you’re interested, you can sign up for more information about the $10,000 Horizon community competitions. After checking out previous winners, I believe that it wouldn’t be difficult to make a winning experience. A tip: making games requires diving deep into logic and code blocks, but if you make a relaxing “explore” experience it’s far easier to do.

2. Join the creator accelerator program. Details on this are a bit fuzzy, but according to people who have already joined it, payment is based on rating and popularity of the worlds that you create. The more visitors you get, the larger the payout. According to one developer in the program (who asked not to be named) his largest check was for $6200 in one month.

Before you get accepted into the creator program, it’s possible to begin making your worlds on your own. The steps for this are relatively simple as well. You need to own an Oculus Quest 1 or 2, but it’s recommended that you own a Quest 2 for the best experience. Once you have it, download Horizon Worlds from the app store. Inside, you’ll need to complete a short tutorial before being able to begin creating.

The metaverse concept as a real product is brand new, but as it explodes, it’s smart to be on the front of the wave. Early adopters, especially people who are interested in creating experiences for it, will find themselves richly rewarded. Like people who learned to program in the 90s, or learned to work bronze at the end of the Iron Age, learning to use and create for VR means you’ll be several steps ahead of everyone else, financially and socially.
