ChatGPT has quickly taken the world by storm, with people across the globe amazed by the many use cases the virtual assistant system presents. Despite the many advantages, certain groups are concerned about some aspects of OpenAI’s artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot.

The Italian Data Protection Authority has temporarily banned ChatGPT in the country, citing concerns that it breaches the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The ban will remain in place until ChatGPT becomes GDPR compliant. If OpenAI fails to make the necessary changes, it could face a permanent ban in Italy and a significant fine.

five key privacy concerns regarding the AI system

According to the Italian authorities, there are five key privacy concerns regarding the AI system. As well as appearing to be in breach of GDPR privacy laws, it also allegedly unjustifiably collects personal data, doesn’t inform users that their data has been collected, lacks age verification systems, and presents a risk of data breaches.

It is unclear if other countries in Europe will follow Italy’s example. Authorities in various countries are looking into different aspects of ChatGPT to ensure compliance with relevant laws.
