Jetstar is set to return to its roots for the launch of its 100th domestic route from the middle of this year.

Commencing on 28 June, the daily service will connect Brisbane with Jetstar’s original home base of Avalon Airport. It will bring the number of destinations served by Jetstar from Avalon to three, alongside Sydney and the Gold Coast, with the low-cost carrier looking to expand its Avalon services.

According to Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully, this will mark the first time in Jetstar’s 20-year history that it has flown 100 domestic routes at the same time, and was enabled by the arrival of its new A321neo LR fleet.

“Creating a direct link between Avalon and Brisbane will provide even more options for Victorians wanting to travel to Queensland at an affordable price, as well as boost tourism to the beautiful Surf Coast region and surrounds,” she said.

“It’s been 20 years since we first took to the skies, allowing more Australians to travel for less and with every opportunity we’re excited to be expanding our network further.

“Demand for our everyday low fares is stronger than ever, as we continue to invest in new aircraft, new uniforms and new routes like this one. We thank the Victorian Government and Melbourne (Avalon) Airport for their continued support.”

David Fox, executive chairman of Avalon Airport, said the Brisbane route is “testament to the strength of [Avalon’s] long term partnership with Jetstar”.

“For us this is more than just a new route – it’s a step towards more opportunities for our passengers and a commitment to opening up more routes for travellers,” he said.

Jetstar initially launched in 2004 with a fleet of 14 717s inherited from Impulse Airways. Its maiden flight took place on 25 May of that year, from Avalon Airport to Newcastle.

As part of its 20th anniversary in May, the airline is looking to recreate its original “Let’s Fly Jetstar” ad campaign with testimonials from real customers.

According to Jetstar’s executive manager customer, Jenn Armor, the carrier has flown almost 400 million customers to 38 destinations across the Asia-Pacific region over the past 20 years.

“We want our 20th year to be about celebrating everyone who has joined us on the journey over the past two decades,” she said.

“What better way to mark our birthday than by telling the stories of all of the people who have made Jetstar what it is today?”

Jetstar has also refreshed its uniforms for pilots, flight attendants and other front-line staff. The new designs, to be worn by more than 5,000 Jetstar workers across Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Singapore starting later this year, use a colour palette pairing navy blue with a softer orange.
