Quebec’s English Education Sector Reconnects at Community School Conference (CLC)

Community Development Agents (CDAs), CLC administrators, teachers, school board personnel, and community partners came together for two days of learning, inspiration, and reconnection! The Go Further, Together CLC Conference fostered collaboration and provided valuable tools and resources aimed at strengthening and empowering our community schools.

The conference featured inspiring talks from leading experts on the community school approach and the importance of family engagement in education. These discussions provided valuable insights into how schools can serve as hubs for community development.

Beyond the keynotes, a variety of workshops equipped participants with practical strategies. Sessions tackled topics like supporting mental health & wellness, understanding poverty, aligning leadership, building powerful partnerships, engaging families in school, parent knowledge in learning, and rethinking resilience.

Networking time provided a long-awaited chance to reconnect with colleagues from across the province, share best practices, and forge new connections. The conference fostered a spirit of shared purpose and collaboration.

Data Logging with the Micro:bit

Read Lexie’s podcast about using the Micro:bit to record data from the Total Solar Eclipse that took place in Montreal on April 8, 2024. Micro:bits are small programmable devices that are popular tools for exploring computer programming and building prototypes, robots, and other creations. Lexie used her micro:bit to log the temperature and light levels during the eclipse. “After enjoying the excitement of totality and the end of the eclipse, I was pleased to see that the Micro:bit had captured both the drop in light and temperature as the moon blocked the sun. It was exciting to relive the moments of totality through the data.”

ELAN’s Mental Health Initiative: The Joy Of Connecting Through Creativity

We are excited to report that ELAN’s 2022-23 Mental Health Initiative trained 35 Teaching Artists and reached over 5700 people of all ages through projects taking place in over 125 schools and community organizations!

Given the rise in mental health issues in recent years, the push  to support Teaching Artists in meeting participants’ needs is more pertinent now than ever before (CHSSN Documentation Centre). With the support of Quebec Writers’ Federation (QWF) and Quebec Drama Federation (QDF), ELAN ArtEd’s Mental Health Initiative provides professional development for Teaching Artists working with children & pre-teens (ages 5-14), youth (ages 15-29) and older adults (ages 55+). Facilitated by Teaching Artist and social worker Alyssa Kuzmarov and music therapist Andy MacDonald, workshops and individual coaching sessions addressed mental health issues as they relate to Teaching Artistry.
