The People’s Bank of China is preparing for what will be the biggest week for the digital yuan project. While the token remains in its pilot phase it will be showcased to the world right as the Winter Olympics starts. The Domestic adoption plans to go into overdrive as the nation celebrates the Lunar New Year. Beijing hosts the games and it indicated that international athletes and their coaches will be invited to use the token in the Olympic Village and sits next to special ATMs that can convert foreign banknotes into CNY Holdings, smartphone apps, and more.

The state-run newspaper People’s Daily reports, the PBoC and its partner, the commercial institution Bank of China say they are ready to deliver on their promises. The PbOc was working closely with the Bank of China since the pilot program started. The news reported that one Bank of china representative stated:

“We are making every effort to prepare for the Winter Olympics under the guidance of the PBoC. During the Winter Olympics, the Bank of China will provide a full range of services such as [software-based] wallets, hard wallets, exchanges, top-ups and [cash] redemption at the Bank of China branch in the Olympic Village.”

The bank added that all sales points in the Winter Olympics areas now accept the digital CNY and NFTc and QR code readers were installed with the bank adding that 24/7 support will be available in a few languages. Journalists and other officials will be invited to make use of the digital token. The overseas spectators however were banned from the games due to China’s ZERO-COVID 19 policy. According to the Beijing financial supervision and Administration, the news reported that by the end of 2021, the city saw more than 12 million personal digital CNY wallets opened in addition to 1.3 million wallets operated by public entities and businesses. The companies working in the food, travel, shopping, and other industries were among those that created accounts.

The Lunar New Year celebrations that get underway this weekend and conclude will allow more merchants, banks, and partners to test their digital CNY Adoption capacities in city areas where the token has already been launched. Companies in the city of Shenzhen spent about $4 million on promotional drives and these include an incentive that will allow travelers to take buses for a nominal fee that is paid in CNY via a specific Banking app.
