A new tenant has emerged to occupy the spot vacated by Myer following the retailer’s shock decision to abandon its flagship location in a major state capital.

Despite having the Myer Centre retail hub named after the department store when it opened along Brisbane‘s Queen Street Mall in 1988, the business has decided not to renew its lease on the prime location.

Myer will move out in July leaving five levels or just over 28,000sq m empty in the heart of the River City, but the space may not be idle for long with Queensland‘s Griffith University emerging as a likely taker.

The university, which is looking for a CBD campus is a candidate to take over the location as a stop gap measure as it searches for a more permanent site, the Courier Mail reported.

Despite failing to renew its lease Myer said it is not abandoning the city centre and is looking for a new location.
