This Week at NCVPS
Registration Opens April 1
Registration for the 2024-2025 school year opens on Monday, April 1. See registration details in the next section.
Progress Reports
We will post our next progress report on Thursday, March 28. See the action steps you can take with the report.
NCVPS Course Break
For spring break, NCVPS teachers and students are scheduled for a two-day course break:
Friday, March 29 – State Holiday
Monday, April 1 – Course Break for Students and Teachers
Public schools across North Carolina have their spring breaks over a four-week window, so NCVPS is only able to schedule a two-day break. If students will not have access to their courses over break, they should alert their NCVPS teachers before leaving. Our teachers are prepared for that, but communication is key here.
Registration Details for 2024-2025
Summer Funding The State Board of Education approved $2,000,000 in ESSER III funding for the NCVPS summer school program, making our online courses even more accessible to students across North Carolina. This funding will be shared with each district and charter school based on their 6-12 ADM. We encourage you to take advantage of this incredible opportunity!
To view the ESSER-funded allotments for your district or charter, please consult the Summer 2024 Enrollments Covered by ESSER III Funds spreadsheet. If you need additional seats above your designated allotments, please fill out this survey.
Our summer school kicks off on June 25. This remarkable opportunity offers students who might not typically have access to summer classes a chance to excel. Each summer, we witness a diverse range of students participating in our courses for various reasons. We are confident that this initiative will have a profoundly positive impact on your community, and we hope you make the most of it.
Registration Details
Registration will open on April 1. Here are the resources you need to get started. Be sure to watch the video for the new process we have to share IEP accommodations with our teachers. You will find that in the 24-25 Academic Year Guide.

Registration Tips
Here are a few tips as you register:
- Make sure you’re enrolling in the correct semester. We have summer, fall, spring, yearlong, early standard, and standard start options.
- Be sure to add the IEP and 504 modifications as you enroll students with IEPs.
- Use the search feature in our registration system to find the courses you are looking for. Similar to PowerSchool, Math is 1-4. World Languages and English are I-IV. Our OCS courses have “blended” in the course title, and our co-taught intervention courses have “co-teaching” in the course title.
- Download an enrollment report when you’re done registering for the day. Check to see if they’re enrolled or waitlisted.
- Understand our waitlist. Our instructional directors use the waitlist to determine if they need to open a new section of the course or increase the capacity of an already opened section.
- We will likely have a few courses end up on our course capacity list. Popular demand and teacher limitations drive this list. Students waitlisted for those courses may have a difficult time getting a seat in the course.
- Download an enrollment report each day that you register to keep up to date on enrollment status.
Early Start vs. Standard Start: Choose Your End Date for Final Grades
NCVPS has two dates for reporting Fall 2024 final grades:
Early Start classes: December 12, 2024
Standard Start classes: January 16, 2025
For Spring 2025, we also have two dates for reporting final grades:
Early Start Classes: May 15, 2025
Standard Start Classes: May 22, 2025
Each semester, we offer two calendars: Early Start and Standard Start. Consider two points when choosing a calendar in which to enroll students.
First: When do you have access to your students? You need to give them usernames and passwords and ensure they can access their NCVPS courses.
Second: When do you need final grades?
Determine when you need final grades and register students for that calendar (Early Start or Standard Start). In the past, we’ve had several schools request early final grades late in the semester. We have moved away from that practice. Our concerns are always for student success and academic integrity. We prefer that students are not rushed through a course. They need time to complete all the modules and objectives in their courses. Please guard that teaching and learning time for your online students. Work with your data managers and curriculum directors to help ensure this best practice.
The last day to register for Early Start classes has been extended to the last day to register for Standard Start classes. The last day to drop is still on the tenth day (you can withdraw throughout the semester).
If you do not see a course offered in Early Start that you need, open a ticket with our Virtual Support Center and request a section.
Adding IEP and 504 Accommodations
Add a student’s IEP and 504 accommodations in our registration system. Please only use this new process to share IEP and 504 student data with our teachers.

Connecting with Parents
As virtual learning has become a part of everyday learning for most families across North Carolina, many parents, guardians, and mentors continue to struggle with how to support their online learners in blended and online classes. To provide resources and strategies for how to support not only our NCVPS students, but all online learners in North Carolina, NCVPS has created two Supporting Online Students (SOS) video courses in Canvas. Both courses are free, open to the public, and do not require login credentials. Please share both links with your educational communities and parent networks.
Supporting Students – All NC
The first course, Supporting Online Students – All NC, is general in nature and is designed for parents, guardians, and mentors of any student who is participating in a blended or online course or is enrolled in a fully online program regardless of school or grade level.
Supporting Students – NCVPS
The second course, Supporting Online Students – NCVPS, is specific to NCVPS and includes specific examples, demonstrations, and resources for NC Virtual parents, guardians, and mentors.
Get Our Apps!
NCVPS has a mobile app, and Canvas has two mobile apps and a web portal. What does each one do? We’re glad you asked! Here you go: NCVPS App: Stay connected with what’s happening at NCVPS. Think of these as “front office” notifications.
Canvas Apps and Web Portal: Connect with a student’s course, see grades, due dates, pacing guides, and message the teacher.
Check out the guide on our Mobile Apps page to see when and where it’s best to use each app or portal.
